Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic and supportive Academic to join our Diploma of Commerce teaching team at Curtin College (full-time, one-year fixed term). You will play a key role in delivering engaging and relevant learning experiences in business-related disciplines, supporting a diverse student cohort, and preparing them for successful progression to Curtin University’s undergraduate programs.
Overview and Objectives of the Position:
This role combines teaching, unit coordination, and program support to deliver high-quality tertiary education at Curtin College. Responsibilities include developing and delivering curriculum, leading teaching teams, ensuring assessment quality, and providing academic support to students. The position also supports the Program Manager with program initiatives, curriculum review, and student success activities, ensuring alignment with university standards and preparing students for progression to higher studies.
Unit Coordinator Responsibilities
Unit Coordinators manage academic and administrative aspects of a unit, ensuring quality teaching and compliance with institutional standards. This position that also involves assisting the Academic Program Manager with program-related activities, such as contributing to course reviews, supporting accreditation and compliance processes, developing academic resources, coordinating program-wide initiatives, and engaging in activities that enhance student success and satisfaction.

Unit Development:
- Develop the Unit Outline, Assessment Guide, and Marking guides/rubric.
- Develop and adapt teaching materials, such as lesson plans, weekly content, and assessment guides, to suit a college student cohort.
- Create lectures and tutorial slides, ensuring alignment with learning objectives.
- Maintain Moodle pages with updated learning materials.

Assessment Design & Moderation:
- Design and adapt assessments to suit the college student cohort.
- Develop assessment support material and learning activities to support college students.
- Conduct assessment moderation and peer review for assessment consistency.
- Conduct assessment validation with the university for assessment consistency.
- Conduct external referencing (where applicable).

Team Coordination:
- Manage and lead the teaching team, ensuring alignment with unit objectives.
- Provide guidance to teaching staff and ensure consistency in delivery.

Student Support:
- Identify and support students at risk through proactive academic assistance.
- Responding to student queries and providing academic support through consultation.
- Liaise with the Program Manager and support services regarding student progress and intervention strategies.

University Alignment & Collaboration:
- Liaise with university unit coordinators to ensure curriculum alignment (where applicable).
- Stay updated on changes in Units of Study at the university and adopt/adapt the changes.

Quality Assurance & Reporting:
- Ensure units meet quality assurance and regulatory requirements.
- Review and finalise assessment and final unit grades. Lock grades and ensure they are correctly recorded for Board of Examiners (BOE) review
- Compile and analyse student performance data to create unit performance reports for academic committees.
- Investigate and manage academic integrity cases.
- Respond to the unit and assessment appeals
- Engage in professional development activities and training sessions to enhance teaching, assessment practices, and knowledge of academic policies, assessment standards, and curriculum updates.
- Adhere to Curtin College and Curtin University (where applicable) policies, procedures and Code of Conduct.
Teaching Responsibilities
Teaching Activities
- Deliver lectures and tutorials for the assigned unit.
- Conduct student consultations, providing academic support and guidance.

- Mark assessments and participate in moderation processes to ensure consistency.
- Respond to assessment appeals and review student results when necessary.

- Monitor student progress and provide intervention support for students at risk.
- Address and manage breaches of academic integrity in accordance with policies.
- Maintain accurate records related to student progress, assessments, and interventions.
- Respond to student queries regarding academic matters, policies, and procedures.
- Liaise with Unit Coordinators, the Program Manager, and support services to address student concerns and ensure appropriate academic support.
- Participate in professional development activities and training sessions to enhance teaching, assessment practices, and knowledge of academic policies, assessment standards, and curriculum updates.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications at a postgraduate level or higher in a relevant discipline area, preferably Marketing, Economics, or Communication from a business perspective, aligned to the Diploma of Commerce curriculum.
- Minimum of two years’ teaching experience in higher education or a pathway college environment, at AQF Level 5 or above.
- Demonstrated computer literacy skills relevant to the role and/or discipline standards.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in innovative approaches to learning and teaching and curriculum development.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute equitably to collaborative tasks.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
Desirable:
- Industry experience relevant to business or commerce.
- Knowledge of undergraduate programs and student pathways to university.
- Awareness of the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021, the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 2000 (ESOS Act), and the National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018.
- Experience in digitally assisted teaching.
