Primary objective
Provide support to and deputise for the Manager Secretariat and provide a high level of Secretariat services for the Attorney-General’s
Department including the effective and timely flow of information and communication with the Minister’s Office and Cabinet Office.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage and coordinate Ministerial briefs, Cabinet Submissions, Executive Council Submissions for the Department and manage and
coordinate Whole of Government and Cabinet Office reporting requests within tight deadlines.
2. Ensure effective communication between the Department and the Minister’s office, Cabinet Office and other government agencies.
3. Provide high level advice and guidance to departmental staff on protocol and procedural matters as they relate to Ministerial (including
Cabinet and Parliamentary) correspondence and assist with providing training and advice to new departmental staff.
4. Assist with the leadership and management of the work unit, including deputising for the Manager as required, and mentoring and
guiding the Ministerial Liaison Officer and Ministerial Liaison Support Officer.
5. Identify obstacles in secretariat systems, processes and competencies that may inhibit the department in achieving its objectives and
timelines and develop practical solutions to resolve these issues through providing feedback to the Manager.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Detailed knowledge of Ministerial, Cabinet and legislative processes.
2. High level liaison and communication (both oral and written) skills, including well developed research skills and attention to detail,
while reflecting an understanding of the audience and an ability to understand and concisely present complex issues in material
provided by others.
3. A high level of document preparation and presentational skills and extensive experience with computer databases and platforms e.g.
Content Manager, Cabinet SharePoint or similar for the purpose of document management.
4. High level of adaptability and flexibility to work in a constantly changing environment while being able to work well under pressure
and meet competing demands in a timely manner.
5. Relevant personal attributes including discretion and ability to maintain judgement and confidentiality, flexibility, political awareness
and sensitivity.
6. Ability to lead and assist in the management of the team, and to motivate staff towards coping with and accepting changing processes
and direction.
Desirable
1. Experience in a Secretariat or Ministerial Liaison role.
2. Understanding or familiarity of the structure and activities of the Attorney-General’s Department.
