Primary objective
Responsible for the efficient and economic daily operational requirements of the canteen including the preparation of meals for all
students in line with the NT Healthy Eating Policy.
Context statement
Yirrkala School is located in East Arnhem Land in the community of Yirrkala. The school provides education to approximately 160
students from Preschool to Year 12. Yirrkala School implements a Bilingual/Biliteracy education program and a Learning on Country
Program. All students speak a Yolngu language as their first language and English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). The
school recognises the importance of good nutrition for the health and well-being of the school community. It aims to help reduce
health risk factors by encouraging the development of good eating habits consistent with dietary guidelines for adolescents. The
school canteen’s operations are guided by the NT School Nutrition and Healthy Eating Policy.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Planning, organising, and monitoring the day-to-day operations of the canteen, including preparation of breakfast, fruit break,
hot lunch and afternoon snacks.
2. Ordering, purchasing, and checking all supplies against invoices and delivery dockets within budget guidelines.
3. Daily cleaning of all benches, food containers, equipment, and fixtures.
4. Ensuring that correct food and hygiene practices are observed by all persons working or volunteering in the canteen.
5. Managing canteen staff and timesheets.
6. Ensuring a pleasant and safe working environment for all persons working or volunteering in the canteen.
7. Promoting healthy food choices in line with NT School Nutrition and Healthy Eating Policy.
8. Undertaking stocktakes as required by School Council and annual menu review.
9. Design weekly menu to meet NT Healthy Eating Policy.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current NT Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card) or ability to obtain.
2. Proven ability to work independently to prepare nutritious meals for students.
3. Proven ability to work well and positively interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
4. Proven strong interpersonal and communication skills.
5. Proven high-level team building and management skills.
6. Demonstrated ability to build constructive and respective relationships with students, staff and other stakeholders.
7. Ability to complete tasks within required time frames, be self-motivate, have a flexible attitude and ability to adapt to change.
Desirable
1. Working knowledge and understanding of the NT Healthy Eating Policy.
2. Qualification in food safety and handling.
3. Experience working in a school environment
