A place for you. It means more here. We bring true purpose, authentic people and a proven path. You bring you.

The Opportunity

At Shine, we champion better justice for our clients. And as our full-time, permanent Deputy National Legal Costing Manager, that starts with you. This role is to be based out of either our Brisbane CBD head office, or our Melbourne CBD office – it’s up to you. And it’s a great opportunity to bring your expertise as a legal costing solicitor to driving the performance of a nationally disbursed, internally focused legal costing team. You’ll have a strong team of eight reporting into you, and you’ll be responsible for their day-to-day leadership – coaching them to success and driving strong outcomes.

Reporting to our national legal costing manager, you will work closely with and learn from an industry leader – with a clearly defined succession plan in place. If you're looking to either continue in, or progress into a leadership role, and are ready to take on more responsibility with a view to long-term national leadership, we want to hear from you.

You'll be part of a truly connected team of authentic people who are as passionate as you are. With empathy, adaptability and initiative, you will be a true champion of our clients by:
  • Assisting the national legal costing manager in managing team performance by allocating workloads effectively.
  • Acting as an escalation point for complex legal costing issues, proactively resolving them with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Providing recommendations on optimal costing methodologies (court scale and loading, hourly rates, fixed fee and hybrid models) across various jurisdictions to maximise case recoverability.
  • Training legal teams on time recording practices, enhancing cost recovery efficiency.
  • Coaching legal, settlement and third-party recovery teams on cost management, including costs agreements, cost recovery strategies, and negotiation of settlements.
  • Preparing accurate and comprehensive costs assessments for compulsory conferences, mediations, and post-resolution proceedings to optimise recoverability.
  • Developing strategies to reduce client complaints regarding costs, thereby improving client service.
  • Monitoring compliance and relevant legislative and jurisdictional costing requirements.
What you’ll bring
  • Significant demonstrated experience as a legal costing solicitor, with a thorough understanding of optimal costing methodologies
  • Experience and/or the desire and aptitude to lead a high-performing team.
  • Commercial acumen, with the ability to drive enhancements to cost recovery efficiency.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to manage internal stakeholders, clients, and third parties, including external cost assessors.
  • Strong statistical and numerical understanding of data, including strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • A commitment to truly connect with those around you and work together to deliver exceptional results for our clients.
  • The ability to deliver outcomes across a variety of competing priorities.
