Engineering Manager – Power Systems Analysis & Grid Connections

Are you ready to lead the future of energy? As our Engineering Manager for Power Systems Analysis & Grid Connections, you’ll be at the heart of WSP’s national Transmission & Distribution business. You’ll guide a high-performing team across strategic advisory, conceptual design, and detailed engineering—driving the success of major energy projects across Australia.

This is more than a management role. It’s a chance to shape the direction of our business, grow our team, and expand our impact in the energy sector. You’ll manage a geographically distributed team, foster collaboration, and build capability—whether you're based in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, or elsewhere in Australia.

About WSP Power & Energy Group

Our Power & Energy team helps clients maintain secure and reliable power supplies, reduce emissions, and deliver future-ready energy solutions. We work across solar, wind, hydropower, thermal energy, waste-to-energy, bioenergy, battery storage, transmission & distribution, and systems and automation—supporting Australia’s transition to a more sustainable future.

Our Power Systems Analysis & Grid Connections team partners with developers, utilities, and network service providers to deliver comprehensive grid connection services across all stages of a project. Our team provides:

  • Feasibility and preliminary assessments
  • Power system modelling and simulation
  • Generator performance standards (GPS) studies
  • Connection application package development (R0 and R1) and ad-hoc support
  • R2 model validation and GPS compliance assessment
  • Ongoing technical advisory through commissioning

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking a leader with a can-do attitude, strong technical and consultative skills, and the ability to prioritise and deliver. You’ll be a team player who’s passionate about mentoring, sharing knowledge, and leading with purpose. You will be well-connected to industry and a leader in winning work.

Your Qualifications & Experience

To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring:

  • A recognised Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Chartered status with Engineers Australia is a plus
  • Extensive experience in power system analysis for utility-scale networks, including steady-state, dynamic and electromagnetic transient (RMS/EMT) studies
  • Proven experience with the generator connection process under the Australian National Electricity Rules (NER) or similar frameworks
  • Proven track record in grid connection and GPS studies (R0, R1), and R2 commissioning plan and hold point testing plus model validation studies for utility-scale Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs)
  • Strong knowledge of NER and Generator Technical Performance Standards (GTPS)
  • Background in consulting engineering, with the ability to manage multiple projects and clients
  • Experience managing consulting engagements, including client liaison, commercial oversight, and scope management
  • Proficiency in PSS/E and PSCAD; experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSSE SINCAL is a plus
  • Familiarity with synchronous and non-synchronous connections, including storage and hybrid technologies
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with grid-forming inverters, hybrid renewable energy projects, data centre connections, and automation/Python programming
  • Experience leading connection negotiations with AEMO, DNSPs, and TNSPs

Leadership & Management Responsibilities

  • Project Management: Lead engagements from advisory to commissioning
  • Business Development: Drive new and repeat business, lead bids and proposals
  • Client Engagement: Deliver efficient and safe engineering solutions
  • Team Leadership: Manage and inspire a team of power system engineers, ensuring quality and resource alignment
  • Mentorship: Coach team members from graduate to senior levels
  • Capability Building: Identify growth needs and attract top talent
  • Collaboration: Work with other Power & Energy groups and leverage global expertise
  • Strategic Contribution: Shape the national Transmission & Distribution strategy
