The Community Gardener will work both independently and with residents of the Barwon Therapeutic Community to maintain the garden and support the general grounds of the site. The Community Gardener will also ensure residents participate in the Resident At Works Program and fulfill their course requirements.
Engage with residents and support their recovery and/or rehabilitation through the provision of horticultural activities (i.e. planting, weeding, irrigation, fertilisation, environmental sustainability etc).
Provide support and training to residents to understand their role within the Resident At Works Program and deliver supervision of gardening activities.
Ensure gardening works are completed safely, efficiently, and effectively by adhering to our policies and procedures.
Provide high quality grounds and gardens maintenance including, but not limited to general gardening, weed control and pruning.
Plant and nurture flowers, shrubs, and trees to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the grounds.
Monitor and maintain irrigation systems to ensure efficient water usage.
Apply fertilizers and pesticides safely and effectively to promote healthy plant growth.
Maintain garden tools and equipment in good working condition.
Work in conjunction residents and volunteers to utilise produce grown in the therapeutic community garden and grounds.
General knowledge and ability to operate a variety of gardening equipment, such as ride-on lawn mower, whipper snipper, mulcher, rotary hoe etc.
What we're looking for:
2+ years' experience in Horticulture and Garden Maintenance.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening skills and clear speaking skills, with an ability to tailor communicate style to suit the diversity of residents.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work autonomously.
An ability to handle sensitive situations with appropriate discretion and judgment.
Ability to mentor and coach other team members and be part of a multidisciplinary team.
Demonstrated experience working hands on with clients with diverse backgrounds.
A strong work ethic, reliability, and a proactive attitude.
