As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the University of Melbourne, you wi ll have the opportunity to develop your research program, collaborate with leading scientists, and shape the next generation of chemists. You wi ll contribute to innovative research in synthetic organic chemistry while teaching and mentoring students at all levels. This role offers access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and the chance to secure external funding for your innovative projects .

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct Innovative Research: Lead research projects in synthetic organic chemistry, publish findings in top journals, and secure external funding.

  • Teach and Mentor Students: Develop and deliver course material in organic chemistry, supervise research students at undergraduate to PhD levels.

  • Collaborate and Engage: Build research partnerships within the university and externally, contribute to outreach activities and public engagement.

  • Contribute to Academic Leadership: Participate in school planning, committee work, and support the development of a collaborative teaching and research culture.

You are a passionate researcher and educator in synthetic organic chemistry with a strong publication record, teaching experience, and the ability to secure research funding and supervise postgraduate students.

You may also:

  • Hold a PhD in Chemistry with expertise in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • Have a track record of high-quality publications in leading international journals.

  • Demonstrate the ability to attract research funding and supervise postgraduate students.

  • Possess excellent teaching skills and enthusiasm for chemistry education at all levels.

  • Have strong communication , interpersonal, and organisational skills.

Your new team – School of Chemistry
The School of Chemistry at The University of Melbourne is one of the largest and oldest in Australia with a distinguished history in teaching and research. The first lectures in chemistry in The University of Melbourne were given in 1856, only three years after the University was founded. Since then, the school has grown and developed with over 2500 undergraduates currently enrolled in Chemistry subjects, and more than 150 BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD research students. Teaching and research in the school is currently undertaken by 23 continuing research and teaching staff, and over 30 research - only staff, who are supported by a team of technical and administrative personnel.

The School of Chemistry is a key participant in the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute, a major world-class biotechnology initiative in Victoria. New purpose-built research laboratories for research groups in the school are housed in the Chemistry Building and the Bio21 Institute. In addition, we are building stronger links with other disciplines within the University and with other research institutions locally and internationally.
