Location: Museum of the Riverina - Botanic Gardens and Historical Council Chambers
Department: Community
Employment type: Temporary Full-time

If you believe that local stories matter—that the objects, people, and events from our own backyard are worth preserving and sharing—this could be your dream start. As a trainee at the Museum of the Riverina, you’ll dive into the rich history of the Riverina region, helping to care for collections, curate engaging exhibitions, and connect our community with its heritage in powerful, personal ways. This two-year full-time traineeship at the Museum of the Riverina is your backstage pass into the world of exhibitions, collection care, education programs and cultural storytelling in an award-winning regional museum.

You’ll work with passionate professionals on projects that honour the past and inform contemporary discussions.

What this role is really about:

  • Helping manage the care and documentation of real historical objects.
  • Bringing exhibitions and public programs to life— including research, curation and installation tasks.
  • Assisting with public education and events that connect and enrich.
  • Greeting and guiding curious visitors through a much-loved cultural institution.

Why this traineeship is special:

  • You’ll study a nationally recognised qualification, fully supported, and customised to your career goals.
  • You’ll be paid to learn, with 3 hours of study time each week.
  • You’ll gain hands-on experience and a competitive edge in the competitive world of collecting institution careers.
  • You’ll be part of a tight-knit team that values rigour, creativity and good conversation.

What’s in it for you:

  • A starting salary of $1,606.60 per fortnight plus superannuation (at 18 years of age or older), varying rates subject to age and experience as per Award provisions.
  • Access to professional mentorship and behind-the-scenes learning opportunities.
  • A resume that stands out in a highly competitive industry.
  • The chance to help shape future exhibitions and collections projects.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • In love with stories, culture, and community.
  • Meticulous, methodical, and never afraid to ask questions.
  • Emotionally intelligent—you listen carefully and respond respectfully (especially when the public gets passionate).
  • Comfortable working on your own and with others (and okay with one Saturday shift per fortnight).
  • Not afraid to get your hands a little dirty (sometimes quite literally—those artefacts need TLC).

What’s next?

Applications close Sunday, 6 July 2025 at 11.59pm AEST, with interviews to follow the week of Monday, 14 July 2025.
