Role
Performing and Visual Arts Technician (Theatre/Stage)
This is a 0.4 FTE (two days per week) position with some flexibility required to support after-hours events and productions. The Performing and Visual Arts Technician supports a wide range of activities within the Performing and Visual Arts Faculty at Melbourne High School, as well as select whole-school and combined schools¿ events. This role is essential in assisting the delivery of high-quality performances, exhibitions, and productions.
The responsibilities outlined below represent the core tasks regularly performed in the role, though they are not exhaustive. Additional reasonable duties may be assigned by management as required.
This is an Education Support Class Range 1-2 position, supporting the educational services provided to students. It does not involve teaching duties, as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students is not a core requirement of this position, except in controlled circumstances where it is incidental and the responsibility remains clearly with a teacher.
A current First Aid qualification and a full driver¿s licence are considered advantageous for this position, given the practical and flexible nature of the work across varied school locations and
Responsibilities
The responsibilities encompass, but is not limited to:
Drama/Theatre Studies/Theatrette: Working with staff members in classes to instruct on use of equipment. Assist with construct or procurement of sets, stage and/or theatrette set ups, materials procurement, transportation of students and props etc to offsite production venues, manage inventory of materials and resources. Become familiar with Midas Audio Desk and Mantra Lite Lighting Desk. Become, or be already familiar with, how to patch lights in theatrette, and work on ladders. Liaise with Maintenance Dept to engage any tradespeople needed for electrics and repairs in theatrette. Periodically organising set pieces, costumes and props in storage locations.
Performing Arts: Inventory and storage of all stage management equipment (audio, lighting, cables, stands etc). Maintain and repair all equipment where necessary. Become familiar with the technical areas of lighting and audio in Memorial Hall. Work with staff members who need lighting/audio for performances (e.g., Music) and be at the set-up of any school owned equipment with teacher in charge of stage crew and the staff member in charge of the performing arts events (Music/Theatre Studies/Art Show)
General support of visual arts staff, with instruction from visual art staff members to assist in preparation of artwork, classroom displays and maintenance of art displays and associated events within the arts, equipment set up and maintenance for practical classes and accompanying staff on excursions.
Media: Working with the Art Tech and head of subject to support development, refinement and consistent implementation of equipment booking, borrowing, return and maintenance processes. Audit and organise media equipment and scheduling repairs/replacements as necessary. Provide technical support with screenings/exhibitions of student work.
Whole School Productions: Under of the guidance of the teachers in charge, collaboratively support the involvement of Stage Crew in school productions, including assigning student roles, providing training and support to Stage Crew students during the productions at Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls¿ High School (such as the Winter Music Concert and combined schools¿ play/musical), and supporting professional crew working with students and staff at internal and external events. Some of these events run outside of the standard school day.
Stage Crew Club: Manage the equipment used by Stage Crew (this is a central pool of equipment used by all events). This includes liaising with staff who organise events, and the staff member in charge of Stage Crew, conducting training to stage crew students on how to use the school¿s equipment, and ensuring an appropriate range of equipment is available to serve the needs of the whole school. (Liaise with teacher in charge of stage crew to buy replacements for broken gear, buying batteries, tape etc and send equipment for servicing, be involved in procuring new equipment when required ¿ garnering advice from suppliers etc and quotes when required)
Any other duties as directed by the Principal and/or Faculty Head.

Location Profile
Melbourne High School is a State Government academic high school for boys in years 9 to 12 with a current enrolment of 1379. Opening in 1905 it was Victoria¿s first state secondary school and moved to its current site in South Yarra in 1927. It is one of four academic select entry Victorian Government schools in Melbourne. Entry is by an examination in year 8. Boys from any school in the state, or outside Victoria, may seek admission. There is also a smaller intake by application and interview at years 10 and 11.
Students in years 9 and 10 undertake a course of core subjects (English, mathematics, science, history, geography, physical education, art, music, and languages ¿ Indonesian, Japanese, French and German) and have a choice of electives. An extensive range of VCE studies across all learning areas is offered to students in years 11 and 12. A health and personal development course also operates at all levels. The school operates on a 10-day timetable of 7 x 43 minute periods per day.
The school places special emphasis on its co-curricular program. Years 9 and 10 students spend a week at the Outdoor Education Centre at Millgrove in the Yarra Valley. Sport is compulsory at all levels. The music and drama programmes are extensive and include the house choral competition in March, Winter Concert, musical and drama productions (generally conducted in cooperation with the MacRobertson Girls¿ High School) and the whole school Speech Night at the end of the year. Students are also encouraged to form their own special interest clubs. There are many opportunities for student leadership at all levels.
In addition to government funding the School seeks voluntary contributions from parents.
