The primary purpose of this role is to provide training and clinical exposure in acute, chronic and cancer pain management with the opportunity to gain procedural skills as well as experience in psychology based treatments.
Candidates who are in their professional development stage can consider applying for this position. Training can be accredited provided the Faculty of Pain Medicine approves this plan.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Specialist. All patients managed within the hospitals of the health district are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
Nepean Pain Management Centre currently awaits re-accreditation in September 2025, until such period it is recognized for the practice development year of FPANZCA training.
What you'll be doing
- Attending and assisting at Pain Management Outpatient Clinics, Acute Pain rounds, Palliative Care clinics, Drug and Alcohol clinics, Operating sessions and case discussions.
- Provide pain management services to in-patient referrals and other consultations.
- Contributing to the research, teaching and quality assurance activities of the Nepean Pain Unit.
- Assist in teaching medical students assigned to the Unit.
Essential requirements
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
- Completion (or expected to complete within 6 months) requirements for a primary specialist qualification acceptable to the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
- This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
- Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
- To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
Selection criteria
- Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.
- Completion (or expected to complete within 6 months) requirements for a primary specialist qualification acceptable to the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
- Adept ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
- Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development, self-education, quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
