The Opportunity
Lithgow City Council has an exciting opportunity for a Resource Recovery Operator to join their team in Lithgow, NSW.
Reporting to the Site Supervisor you will be responsible for the operation of site plant and equipment and to provide an effective landfill and resource recovery service to the community. You will undertake customer service, load inspection and resource recovery activities. This position will allow you to work within and contribute to a multi-skilled team that promotes council’s service image by providing courteous, responsive and effective customer service.
The Lithgow Solid Waste Facility and Resource Recovery Centre operate 7 days per week, the preferred applicant will be required to work weekends.
More specifically, your duties will include (but will not be limited to):
- Operate site plant and equipment including, but not limited to, waste compactor, track loader, wheeled loader, excavator and water cart
- Screen customers and loads to ensure only authorised waste is delivered to site and customers are charged at the appropriate rate
- Identify asbestos containing materials through visual inspection or testing with supplied equipment
- Direct traffic to appropriate areas of the site dependent on load type
- Separate recoverable materials into stockpiles and ensure stockpiles are managed in a safe and effective manner
- Site housekeeping including litter collection and keeping resource recovery areas tidy
- Follow safe operating procedures and report any unsafe plant, equipment or practices to the Site Manager/Supervisor
- Maintain basic service, site inspection and other records as directed
- Undertake minor maintenance and care of plant and equipment
- Undertake relief work where required at the gatehouse
- Provide efficient and effective customer service
About you
The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:
- Experience in landfill and resource recovery operations or similar
- Competency in the operation of heavy plant including waste compactor, track loader, wheeled loader, excavator or similar
- Current Class C Drivers Licence
- Sound communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to quality customer service
- Willingness to undertake additional training
- Demonstrated understanding of Work Health & Safety and Risk Management Responsibilities
- Demonstrated commitment to honesty and integrity
- Sense of civic pride/environmental
In addition, an ideal candidate would have:
- Class HR drivers Licence
- Asbestos awareness training
- Understanding of environmental issues and the role that a waste facility holds within the community
- First Aid certificate.
Salary and Benefits

- Between $1,237.47 and $1,359.72 per week, commensurate with your skills, qualifications and experience. Weekend penalties are additional.
