Job Description

Position Purpose

The State Transport Manager holds strategic and operational responsibility for the end-to-end transport function within Western Australia. This senior leadership role ensures the effective management of people, fleet, resources, compliance, safety, and cost, while driving performance, service delivery, and continuous improvement across all transport functions.


Job Description

Operational Management:

  • Lead the state’s transport strategy aligned with national objectives and commercial goals.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that enhance service delivery, reduce cost, and improve fleet efficiency.
  • Support, develop, mentor and coach direct reports, drivers and internal stakeholders.
  • Setting standards and managing the team to maintain those standards, ensuring a consistent outcome and a stabilised service, whilst determining how to continuously improve our services and processes.
  • Monitor transport KPIs, service levels, and delivery performance.
  • Develop and drive business process and procedure improvements.

Planning:

  • Strategically plan all transport operations accordingly to ensure that all freight is picked up and delivered according to the customers’ orders and requirements.
  • Implement and ensure that all staffing levels within the operations environment that are consistent with the work task and budget guidelines.
  • Liaise with customers regarding delivery times, issues, and special transport requirements.
  • Respond to service queries and resolve any transport-related complaints.

Financial:

  • The ability to effectively manage the utilisation of staff resources, company assets and subcontractors, measured by meeting and exceeding budget measures.
  • Monitor spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Manage and control labour allocations are consistent with approved budgets.
  • Analysing equipment utilization and develop strategies for optimising efficiently (how to maximise delivery loads to achieve cost efficiency).
  • Participate in Capex & Budget processes to ensure best outcomes for the Transport Department.

Leadership:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of Transport Managers, Supervisors, Planners, and Drivers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and safety
  • Human Resource planning including recruitment, inductions, offboarding and shift planning
  • Employee performance management including disciplinary matters

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Certificate IV or higher in Transport & Logistics, Business, or related discipline.
  • Experience in heavy vehicle transport (e.g., linehaul, interstate freight).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in transport/logistics operations, with
at least 3 years in a management role.
  • Experience using the SAP system
  • Experience implementing new systems / process
  • Experience in a freight scanning environment
