The Opportunity
The Travel Security and Insurance Specialist leads the program employee health and travel insurance functions across Asia Pacific, including coverage queries, broker negotiation and coordination, renewals, compliance, and risk mitigation. This role also manages Abt Australia and UK’s relationship with International SOS, ensuring effective membership administration, traveller support, and issue resolution. As custodian of the Adaptive Mobilisation and International Travel framework, the role liaises with the Global Security Office and Program teams to assess travel risks, maintain accurate tracking, and ensure safe, compliant international travel.
Core Responsibilities
Insurance
- Provide technical guidance and respond to internal queries regarding program employee health and travel insurance coverage.
- Ensure all departments and Programs understand their insurance needs and facilitate appropriate coverage adjustments as necessary.
- Liaise with insurance brokers to coordinate the negotiation terms and ensure comprehensive coverage, taking into account local regulatory compliance requirements across various Asia Pacific countries.
- Develop and maintain strong broker relationships and stay informed on market trends.
- Coordinate the annual insurance renewals process, including gathering necessary information, preparing documentation, and ensuring timely negotiation and renewals.
- Analyse renewal proposals and advise senior management on coverage and cost-effectiveness, seeking out best value for money options.
- Collaborate with the Risk Management team to identify and assess risks and ensure they are adequately covered by insurance policies for program health and travel policies.
- Develop strategies to mitigate risks through insurance solutions.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date insurance records and documentation.
- Prepare regular reports on insurance activities, renewals, claims, and coverage status for management review.
- Analyse insurance data to identify trends and areas for improvement, and develop tools or update policies to support continuous improvement initiatives.
International SOS Relationship Management
- Act as the key contact for Abt Australia and UK for International SOS membership management, including service updates, renewal periods, and regular reporting.
- Lead on the resolution of complaints received from program staff, influencing International SOS to uphold service level agreements and obligations.
- Support travellers in accessing the International SOS Assistance App and related solutions.
- Regularly monitor the International SOS Travel Tracker to remove duplicates, ensure accurate contact details, and prevent traveller drop-off.
- Maintain an accurate list of authorised approvers and ensure correct report distribution and manager view access.
- Prepare and present reports on membership utilisation, service performance and other trends to internal stakeholders (Program Delivery team, Senior Leadership Team, Program Teams)
Adaptive Mobilisation and International Travel Framework
- Serve as custodian of the Adaptive Mobilisation and International Travel framework, including the Adaptive Mobilisation and Travel Procedure and LGBTIQ+ Safe Mobilisation and International Travel Policy.
- Liaise with the Abt Global Security Office regarding new travel destinations and manage the approved country list within the control strategy.
- Provide strategic advice to Program Teams on travel risk management and risk acknowledgement processes.
Travel Safety and Security Coordination
- Coordinate with the Global Security Office and Program Safety and Security Managers or focal points on travel-related safety and security concerns, ensuring compliance with Abt Security protocols and Government of Australia travel and security advice (Smart Traveller).
- Influence internal and external stakeholders to adopt best practices in travel safety and contribute to continuous improvement of safety frameworks.
What We Value
- Bachelor’s Degree + Five years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Three years of relevant experience
- 5-10 years’ experience in insurance coordination or travel risk management, preferably within a multinational or development sector organisation.
- Strong understanding of insurance principles and travel safety frameworks, including business travel, expatriate coverage, and local medical insurance.
- Proven ability to manage external relationships, particularly with service providers such as International SOS and insurance brokers, including membership oversight, reporting, and issue resolution.
- Experience in coordinating travel safety and risk mitigation strategies, including familiarity with travel tracking systems and global security protocols.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to liaise effectively across internal teams (e.g. Program Delivery, Global Security Office) and external partners.
- High level of organisational and analytical skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain accurate records, and produce reports for senior management.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements across Asia Pacific jurisdictions relevant to insurance and international travel.
