About the opportunity
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg is a tertiary academic perinatal- neonatal unit accredited for Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) advanced training in neonatal-perinatal medicine/ paediatrics. We are affiliated to the Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, University of Melbourne, with clinical training, research, education and professional development integral to our operations. The 61-bedded NICU/SCN has approximately 1500 admissions per annum offering the highest standards of care for the sickest and tinniest new born babies in Victoria.
The NICU operations are complemented by a high performing Maternal Foetal Medicine unit and a comprehensive long-term outpatient follow up program including dedicated growth and development clinics.
Neonatal Clinical Research Fellow
This position is a joint clinical-research training position based at Mercy Hospital for Women, Heidelberg with fractional clinical (0.5 EFT; affiliated to Mercy Health) and fractional research appointment (0.5 EFT affiliated to Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health, University of Melbourne; pending final approval from University of Melbourne) with the aim of concurrently undertaking advanced clinical training in neonatal- perinatal medicine and high-quality neonatal research preferably as part of a higher academic degree (MD/PhD) in neonatal medicine. The fractional research fellow appointment will be subject to the final approval by University of Melbourne.
The role is for 12 months with a possibility of further extension based on mutual agreement and suitability assessed based on the performance.
The position offers the best of clinical and academic opportunity in neonatal-perinatal medicine
- Develop advanced clinical skills in diverse aspects of neonatal-perinatal medicine including management of neonates with complex presentations, extreme prematurity, long term follow-up of high-risk infants and participation in multidisciplinary outpatient foetal medicine clinics
- Develop an academic career in neonatal research and pursue higher degree in neonatal-perinatal medicine through University of Melbourne with training in all aspects of clinical/ translational research. The position is supported and directly supervised by a dedicated research directorate headed by Professor of Neonatology/Neonatal Research Director
- Develop clinical governance and leadership skills enabling your transition to specialist consultant role in neonatal-perinatal medicine
- Develop teaching and mentorship skills with supervision and training of medical students, research trainees, paediatric/neonatal trainees
- Opportunity to develop point of care ultrasound training (POCUS) in neonates with the option of completing Australian Society of Ultrasound Medicine CCPU (neonatal) training and or develop POCUS based neonatal research
