2026 Advanced Cataract Surgery Fellow

Northern Health Australia
$79,425 - $100,570 a year
Australia
Full time

About Northern Health:

As an organisation we have a clear focus on how we service and partner with our community, including our strategy of helping the community stay well when at home. Our reputation of community minded, inclusive and progressive is matched to none.

Northern Health is located in the rapidly growing northern suburbs with projected growth the biggest in the state. With a booming, culturally rich and diverse community, and less than an hour’s drive from the CBD, Melbourne’s North is fast becoming the place to be!

The Role:

A new opportunity has arisen to pursue high-volume and advanced cataract surgery training at Northern Health combined with Emergency and acute ophthalmology training at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. The fellowship is supervised by leaders in the field of cataract surgery and includes training in the latest micro-surgical instrumentation and techniques, along with good exposure to complex case management.

This position is split equally between The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital and Northern Health.

The ophthalmology service at Northern Health is based at Broadmeadows Hospital which is situated 20 kilometres from the CBD and within a 20-minute drive of The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital. The dedicated ophthalmology clinic and ultra-modern theatre are adjacent to each other. The service is equipped with the Alcon Cataract Suite (Argos OCT, Centurion ActiveSentry and LuxOr Revalia microscope with Verion).

At Northern Health, you will receive mentorship by Dr Jack Kane, Dr Jonathan Kam, Dr Nishant Gupta, Dr Malvika Gupta and Dr Nicholas Cheng. As a teaching hospital we have a RANZCO registrar and a senior fellow in addition to this cataract fellow position.

Our training program has an impressive reputation for high quality teaching and successfully guiding fellows to their FRANZCO qualification. As part of the Northern Clinical School of the University of Melbourne there are opportunities for research. The fellow should expect to complete between 400 and 600 cases in a year during their 2.5 days at the Northern and will have both supervised and unsupervised clinic sessions.

Regular participation in team meetings and audits will be expected.

The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital (RVEEH) is part of a state-wide teaching, training and research health service specialising in eye, ear, and throat medicine. The Hospital celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013 and is Australia's only specialist eye and ear hospital.

At the RVEEH the Fellow (who will be referred to as a Senior Registrar) will be rostered to the Emergency Department and acute ophthalmology clinics. The role will include teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, and evening, weekend and overnight shifts (approximately 3 nights every 4-6 weeks) in the Emergency Department.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Applicants must have at least 3 years of accredited training
  • Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Current National Police and Working with Children History Check
  • Operate independently for phacoemulsification cataract surgery
  • See general ophthalmology patients autonomously

Next Steps . . .

If this opportunity sounds like the next step in your career, then we would love to hear from you.

For further details, please refer to the Position Description. Alternatively, you can contact Dr Jack Kane - [email protected]
