The Kennaook / Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station (KCGBAPS) is a scientific observatory located near the northern tip of the rugged west coast of Tasmania, looking toward the Southern Ocean. KCGBAPS also maintain a logistic hub located in Smithton, 50 km to the east. The work at Kennaook / Cape Grim has chronicled the changing composition of the global atmosphere, unaffected by local pollution, for almost 50 years. The requirement for this work is as strong now as it has ever been. This is an exciting leadership role, responsible for much of Australia's contribution to the World Meteorological Organisation Global Atmosphere Watch Program and contributing to Australia's responsibilities under international arrangements such as the Paris Agreement and Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

The manager of KCGBAPS is responsible for the efficient operations of the station and liaison with relevant national and international bodies.
The Manager of KCGBAPS is also the Bureau's focal point for the Kennaook / Cape Grim Science Program. The KCGSP is a collaboration jointly managed by the Bureau and CSIRO, with contributions from many institutions including the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). The Science Program provides the scientific guidance, leadership, and expertise necessary to remain at the cutting edge of atmospheric composition measurement. The Science Program also leverages from the observation program to further scientific understanding of atmospheric composition, particularly as this pertains to drivers of climate change and stratospheric ozone depletion. The manager is responsible for translating the needs of the Science Program into station operations.

The position is part of the Bureaus Observing Systems and Operations Program (OSO) of the Data and Digital Group (DDG). The role of Manager KCGBAPS is a demanding but rewarding one. It requires a broad range of developmental and management skills, as well as problem solving skill in experimental science.

Manager responsibilities include:
  • management of the station operations and resources, and operational supervision of the data streams as part of the Bureau’s Observations Program. Being the focal point for contact between the station and associated scientists, government departments, external agencies and suppliers of services and equipment.
  • contributing to the production of the Baseline report series.
