South Australia
Full time

Agency Purpose

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The AEC’s values and commitments

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

The Team

You will join a high performing, collaborative team that facilitates the readiness of the agency and the proper conduct of electoral events, upholding the Electoral Integrity Framework. Reporting to the Director Operations, you will be an active participant in the broader SA leadership team, modelling exceptional behaviours and contributing to our culture, business planning and deliverables.

You will lead, enable and motivate teams and individuals to administer, prepare for and deliver electoral events.

You will be based out of the Adelaide CBD but will be required to manage and support a diverse and at times a geographically dispersed operational network to deliver large-scale results in a broad and complex delivery environment.

Our leaders are committed to learning and self-development, and responsible for building the technical capability and fostering the career development of their employees. They value collaboration and working together to ensure delivery of seamless electoral services.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a strong leader who is agile, self-motivated and results-driven to manage state election planning, delivery and evaluation in SA.

You will be responsible for focusing strategically on the agency objectives to facilitate the adoption of best practice across the broader leadership network, while also leading your team in project management, financial, procurement and logistics to enhance both business as usual and election planning activities.

You will contribute to the development of team objectives for short term tasks and strategic planning for longer-term initiatives, including setting priorities for the work area, maintaining team cohesion, and ensuring quality of outputs for the work area.

Suitable applicants may be considered for future opportunities with the AEC in South Australia. Roles available will be dependent on the changing business needs and requirements of the AEC. Future opportunities may be filled on an ongoing or non-ongoing basis.

To excel you’ll have:

  • Proven leadership and people management experience and skills, preferably during major logistical events. Ability to lead, manage and develop capabilities, encouraging career development and embedding professionalism.
  • A positive attitude and demonstrated ability to respond quickly to change and achieve objectives with quality outcomes in dynamic and challenging environments.
  • Experience in managing and delivering results within tight time restraints and with competing priorities, displaying resilience by remaining positive, persistent and focus on achieving results despite setbacks while working under pressure, in a systematic, methodical, and orderly manner while monitoring and maintaining high quality standards.
  • Ability to effectively and confidently communicate, collaborate and lead negotiations with team members, colleagues, business areas and external stakeholders. Ability to promote ideas and express opinions, information and key points clearly, and respond quickly to stakeholder needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to show good judgement by undertaking critical analysis to use data and information to identify interdependencies and risks and design and implement practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • A strong commitment to collaboration as a tool to facilitate and drive work to achieve a nationally led, consistent approach to service delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under own direction while taking responsibility for actions, projects and people and make quick, clear decisions considering risks.

Desirable

  • Ability to acquire knowledge in electoral legislation and operational requirements demonstrating an understanding of newly presented information encouraging and role modelling an organisational learning approach.

Eligibility

  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
