La Trobe University’s Art Institute is seeking a passionate and experienced Collections Officer to support the care, display and access of the University’s remarkable art and cultural collections.

With custodianship of over 10,000 objects across seven collections valued at more than $25 million, LAI plays a critical role in advancing the University's Arts and Culture Strategy 2022–26. Our mission is to connect La Trobe’s research, teaching, creative industries and communities through dynamic cultural engagement.

This pivotal role focuses on supporting collection access at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus, including object-based learning and curated campus displays. You’ll collaborate closely with curators, registrars and other stakeholders to bring the University’s collections to life in a vibrant academic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a key contact for artwork display requests on Bundoora campus.
  • Manage safe access to collections for teaching, research, and public engagement.
  • Undertake object handling, installation, storage care and condition reporting.
  • Support inventory and administrative processes to maintain best-practice collection care.
  • Recommend suitable artworks for display and contribute to display planning.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small, dedicated team.

Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant diploma qualification with museum/gallery experience, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of best-practice museum standards in collection care and handling.
  • Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Capacity to work flexibly and independently in a dynamic university setting.
  • A keen eye for detail and willingness to contribute to process improvement.
