Primary objective
Deliver and administer program outcomes relating to bushfire mitigation and management and provide operational support across the
Northern Territory, while supporting volunteers and stakeholders to create a fire resilient community.

Context statement
Bushfires NT undertakes fire management programs, including compliance and enforcement, planned burning operations, supporting and
undertaking wildfire suppression activities, and working together with volunteers to support a network of stakeholders.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake the responsibilities of a Fire Control Officer pursuant to the Bushfire Management Act 2016, ensuring responses to bushfire

incidents, investigative activities and issuing of permits are undertaken in accordance with legislative obligations.
2. Support the development and execution of bushfire mitigation in the region, including the assessment of risk and preparation of

tailored fire management plans, providing guidance to landholders and stakeholders.
3. Lead on the ground management of wildfire incidents and coordination resources, including volunteer teams, to achieve safe and

effective fire management outcomes.
4. Manage the delivery of assigned work projects including planning, scoping, stakeholder consultation, resourcing and key milestone

reporting ensuring completion within required deadlines, quality standards and within budget.
5. Support the delivery of nationally accredited training to Volunteer Bushfire Brigades across the Northern Territory.
6. Assist in the development of tools to support landowner engagement and understanding of legislative requirements.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience and qualification in wildfire suppression including the ability to lead operational emergency response

activities involving volunteers and other agency personnel including working knowledge of AIIMS.
2. Ability to understand and interpret legislation and apply this knowledge to a variety of situations.
3. Demonstrated competence and experience in the implementation of fire management programs including undertaking risk

assessments and prescribed burns to reduce bushfire risk.
4. Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise activities that involve the planning, management and completion of programs.
5. Demonstrated experience working with volunteers, leading and managing people and working effectively as a part of a team.
6. Proficiency in utilising computerised systems and interrogating and analysing databases for planning, management, compliance,

investigative and reporting purposes.
7. Ability to cultivate and maintain productive networks and working relationships with a broad range of internal and external

stakeholders and government agencies including community engagement and consultation approaches.
8. Current NT Drivers Licence (Manual) and Working with Children (Ochre) Card, or ability to obtain.

Desirable
1. Awareness of Geographic Information System mapping technology and its application to fire management.
2. Certificate IV Training and Assessment or Certificate IV in Government Investigations.

Further information
During periods of heightened operational activity, the incumbent will be required to provide operational support across the Territory,
including travel and work in remote locations, and will be required to undertake remunerated, rostered on-call responsibilities as the
Northern Territory Duty Officer including after hours and on weekends. The successful applicant is required to provide a current criminal
history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position.
