Head of the Department of Mission

Moore College is seeking expressions of interest in a teaching position, lecturing principally in Christian Mission, and heading its Mission Department.

The College

Moore College is an evangelical theological college based in Newtown, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. It was established in 1856 and in 2020 it became one of Australia’s first University Colleges.

The College prepares men and women for a lifetime of Christian ministry and mission through sustained in-depth biblical and theological training, conducted in the context of a vibrant Christian community.

It has a significant role in the life of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, the Archbishop of Sydney is the President of its Governing Board, and many of its faculty are also involved in other diocesan activities. However, while preparing ministers for service in Anglican churches in Sydney, the College also trains pastors for other denominations and Christian workers for other settings around the world, including overseas cross-cultural mission.

It currently has around 250 full-time undergraduate students, with a large number of part-time, distance and post-graduate students. The student body is diverse, with both men and women, a large number of international students, and Australian students from a wide variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Our range of courses extends from diploma to doctoral level and our goal is produce graduates who love God, love God’s word and love God’s people. We are concerned to pass on the faith once for all delivered to the saints, to deepen students’ convictions, to shape their character and hone their skills in ministry.

The College’s Centre for Global Mission provides resources in more than 20 languages for theological education partner institutions throughout the world. We have close working relationships with a variety of mission organisations, but most especially the Church Missionary Society (CMS).

Further information about the College can be found on our website.

The Position

A member of the Faculty at Moore participates in the College community primarily as a teacher and pastor, but is also involved in research, academic administration and the life of the churches we serve. This particular position has unique dimensions associated with the College’s ongoing engagement with global mission. The Head of the Department of Mission has a key role in preserving and extending that engagement, and is the most prominent advocate of cross-cultural mission and the College’s involvement in it both within and outside the formal structures of the College. The Head of the Department of Mission also has a close working relationship with the College’s Centre for Global Mission.

The successful candidate will have:

  • strong evangelical and reformed theological convictions consistent with the College’s published values
  • significant experience in cross-cultural mission, preferably overseas
  • post-graduate qualifications in biblical or theological studies
  • an ability to teach and develop courses in Christian mission and cross-cultural ministry, but also more widely in biblical and theological studies
  • proven pastoral skills, particular in cross-cultural settings
  • good organizational skills
  • demonstrable research ability

The successful candidate will also preferably be an ordained Anglican able to be licensed (or authorised) by the Archbishop of Sydney to minister in the Diocese of Sydney.

Teaching experience in undergraduate and/or adult education contexts and previous full-time pastoral ministry experience will be an advantage.
