Open to candidates with relevant work rights

The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) at Edith Cowan University (ECU) is seeking expressions of interest for new members.

To support research activities at ECU, the HREC reviews research projects to ensure that they meet ethical requirements as outlined by the National Statement of Ethical Conduct in Human Research, 2023 (NS).

Committee members should possess the following attributes:
An ability to communicate well, which includes a capacity to listen to, and appreciate, the views of others and to formulate and express a considered opinion. This is essential for all members of the HREC. So, too, is a willingness to enter into a process in which differences and conflicting points of view can be explored and resolved.
An interest in ethics and a capacity to understand the issues, although lack of formal training in ethics should not be a reason for exclusion from an HREC.
Sufficient time to attend meetings and to read research proposals and other relevant documents ahead of meetings.

The ECU HREC is looking for members in any of the following categories:

A person with knowledge of, and current experience in, the professional care, counselling or treatment of people; for example, a nurse or allied health professional.
A person who performs a pastoral care role in the community including, but not limited to, an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander elder or community leader, a chaplain or a minister of religion.
A qualified lawyer, who may or may not be currently practising.
A person who brings a broader community or consumer perspective.

The HREC meets on the first Friday of every month for approximately 3 hours commencing at 1.00 pm. Meetings are held either at the Mt Lawley or Joondalup campus of ECU. Remote participation is an option. In addition, members would be required to review applications between meetings. A comprehensive induction is provided for new members and members will be renumerated with $300 for each meeting.

Interested people will need to provide:
A brief resume;
The names of at least two referees; and
A short statement setting out the reasons why they are interested in serving on the committee and what they believe they would bring to the committee.
Please forward all expressions of interest through to [email protected].

ECU is a diverse and inclusive workplace reflecting the differences in society. Specific strategies and initiatives are in place to address underrepresentation of specific groups. Applications are encouraged from suitably qualified people from all backgrounds. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply.
