Toowoomba Grammar School is looking for a Laboratory Assistant to join the team on a fixed term contract until June 2026. The Laboratory Assistant works in collaboration with Science Teachers and the Laboratory Technician to ensure materials are prepared safely and promptly for effective curriculum delivery, while maintaining resources and facilities.

About Toowoomba Grammar School

Toowoomba Grammar School was founded in 1875 and is a member school of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS). It is an independent non-denominational day and boarding school for boys with a total enrolment of 1,200 from Preparatory to Year 12. There are approximately 300 boarders in the School coming predominantly from throughout Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory. The School’s campus covers 20.5 hectares and is located one kilometre from the centre of Toowoomba.

About the Position

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our Science Department. Working closely with the Laboratory Technician and teaching staff, you will be responsible for preparing and setting up laboratory equipment and materials for classroom experiments and demonstrations. Your attention to detail and commitment to safety will ensure that all practical activities are conducted in a clean, organised, and compliant environment. You will assist in maintaining laboratory spaces, managing stock and equipment, and ensuring the safe storage and disposal of chemicals and biological materials. Your role also includes administrative support such as record-keeping, stock control, and data entry, as well as contributing to the preparation of field trips and excursions.

Selection Criteria:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Laboratory Assistant or in a similar role.
  • Certificate II or III in Laboratory Skills/Techniques or equivalent practical experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Possession of a valid Blue Card (Working with Children Check).
  • Experience in a school or educational environment (desirable).

You will be able to demonstrate your ability and commitment to the following:

  • Sound knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, chemical handling, and WH&S standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, OneNote, Teams, and online systems such as RiskAssess and Chemwatch.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare, maintain, and store laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Experience with stock control, record-keeping, and laboratory administration.
  • Ability to conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines, and work efficiently in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in laboratory operations and documentation.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with staff and students.
  • Ability to provide guidance on experimental procedures and safety practices within the limits of expertise.
