Join the change. Together, we’ll make history

As we keep the lights on for over four million customers and move towards a more sustainable way of life, it’s an exciting time to be at AGL. We’re re-imagining how homes and business live and work across the country and we want you to be a part of it. This moment will define our time, and your career as you work alongside Australia's best and brightest minds. You’ll grow and learn in a collaborative, safe and supportive environment and play your part in changing the course of tomorrow.
Everyone at AGL is an important part of building a better energy future and we want you to join in.
About the role
The Physical Markets Trader is responsible for managing AGL’s wholesale electricity procurement costs through the commercial operation of AGL’s generation assets in the National Electricity Market (NEM).
The Physical Markets Trader must plan, analyse and execute the trading strategies for AGL’s 8,000MW generation portfolio. The aim of the Physical Markets team is the efficient short-term optimisation of AGL’s electricity position, considering both short-term and long-term fuel constraints and plant outages, whilst ensuring that internal policies and procedures and Regulatory obligations are met.
Note: You would be joining a team that operates in a 24/7 market. This will require working on a roster to trade overnight and weekends.
What you’ll be doing
  • Ensure optimal dispatch through short-term planning of AGL generation assets, including fuel requirements (water, gas, coal and diesel), outage planning and ensuring AGL meets all rule requirements under the National Electricity Rules
  • Manage Power Purchase Agreements with third parties to ensure that AGL is meeting all obligations under the agreements
  • Ensuring the business is compliant with market rules and AEMO procedures by keeping up to date with changes in gas and electricity market rules and the impact on Integrated Energy. Perform regular reviews to ensure operations are compliant with market rules
  • Ensure that all Health, Safety and Environment Systems and goals are introduced and adhered to while meeting the organisation’s policies and standards for HSE management
  • Demonstrate the AGL values by acting in the best interests of AGL at all times and working together across the business to create the best overall results and decisions. Encourage the sharing of skills and experience and contributing to the success of the business at all levels, in a way that is vital and authentic
  • Assisting in formulating an overall position for both Electricity and Gas Operations by reviewing various assumptions and approaches within the group in respect of the monthly scheduling activities
  • Submitting offers and rebids for AGL’s coal, gas, hydro, wind, solar, battery and diesel generation to the National Electricity Market (NEM) spot market for dispatch
  • Submitting nominations to the Physical Markets gas operations team, taking into consideration imbalances, contractual limits and relevant timings
  • Utilising demand side management as required
  • Operating the electricity portfolio 24x7
  • Operating the portfolio within the AGL generation Bidding Policies and Procedures and National Electricity Rules
  • Undertaking all activities within approved delegations
About You
You will have experience in roles directly trading or supporting traders in electricity spot markets (such as electricity analytical roles), but most importantly you will be confident, articulate and comfortable working in a high performing team.
What you’ll bring to the table:
  • Tertiary qualification with a strong quantitative component (such as engineering, economics, actuarial science)
  • Comfortable making decisions under pressure
  • Ability to work unsupervised and manage a significant portfolio base
  • Ability to build and manage relationships both internal and external
  • Excellent presentation, communication and negotiations skills
  • Knowledge of financial derivatives an advantage
  • Experience in traded commodities in financial markets and an understanding of fundamental market drivers
  • Adaptable team player who will work collaboratively with peers in a small but high performing team
