Primary objective
Provide professional advice and information to the Department, the Northern Territory Planning Commission, relevant
Government Departments and agencies and the public on planning and development issues.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide professional advice and information to the Department, the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, the

Northern Territory Planning Commission, relevant Government agencies, industry and the public on strategic land use
policy and plans in consultation with stakeholders and the community to ensure that land is developed for the sustainable
economic, environmental and social benefits of Territorians.

2. Develop land use planning projects including amendments to the Northern Territory Planning Scheme for the
Department in order to meet the Government and the NT Planning Commission’s objectives and timeframes.

3. Liaise and facilitate consultation with all stakeholders, community groups and service agencies on strategic planning
projects, and lead negotiations with all stakeholders to reach a viable outcome.

4. Develop land use concepts and associated policy for the Department and the Planning Commission that respond to
issues raised in consultation with all stakeholders.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree or diploma related to Land Use Planning from an Australian tertiary institution, or equivalent, or admission, or

eligibility for admission, to full membership of the Planning Institute of Australia.
2. Ability to provide professional advice to government, industry and the public on land planning and development

processes and requirements.
3. Knowledge and a minimum of two years’ experience in dealing with a wide range of land use and development planning

issues, including high levels of competency in the assessment of development applications made under statutory
planning requirements.

4. Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a range of technical, professional and
lay people and prepare correspondence.

5. Demonstrated ability to operate efficiently and reliably with minimum supervision and providing support to the team
environment.

6. Current Northern Territory Drivers Licence or ability to obtain.
7. Well-developed political and cross-cultural awareness skills.

Desirable
1. Demonstrated capacity to develop and present spatial land use concepts and associated policy.
2. Good knowledge of the Northern Territory planning procedures, systems and Departmental practices.
