Lead the future of safety thinking at Aurizon
We’re seeking a Human Factors and organisational performance expert to join our Safety Strategy, Risk and Improvement team. This is not your typical safety role – we're not looking for a traditional safety professional. We're after someone who brings deep human-centred design expertise, analytical thinking, and a systems mindset, ideally from industries such as rail, mining, aviation, or heavy industry – where 24/7 operations and shift work are the norm.
This is a unique opportunity to shape our enterprise-wide safety strategy, influence organisational learning, and uplift safety capability through advanced human factors integration and data-led insights.
About the role
In this people leadership role, you will:
- Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of Aurizon’s enterprise safety strategy – translating strategy into action.
- Partner with operational leaders to embed safety initiatives and build aligned business unit plans that reflect frontline realities.
- Provide enterprise-wide human factors (HF) expertise – influencing system design, procedures, and environments to optimise human performance and reduce risk.
- Champion Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles to foster systems thinking, psychological safety and organisational learning.
- Lead a high-performing team responsible for analytics, strategy development and HF integration.
- Monitor and report on enterprise safety performance, using insights to drive proactive improvements.
- Develop practical tools and guidance to embed HF into engineering, operational design, and change programs.
About you
We're looking for a proven leader in Human Factors with experience working in complex, safety-critical, shift-based environments (e.g. rail, mining, aviation, or defence).
You will bring:
- A tertiary qualification in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology or a related discipline (mandatory).
- Strong industry experience applying human factors across system design, performance improvement and risk mitigation.
- Experience leading or contributing to enterprise-level strategy, culture programs or change initiatives.
- Ability to translate complex safety, behavioural and systems data into practical and actionable insights.
- Experience influencing and presenting to senior leaders and diverse stakeholder groups.
- Demonstrated understanding of rail safety national law and WHS legislation (or equivalent).
- Membership (or eligibility) with HFESA or similar professional body (preferred).
- Proven people leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring and team development.
What we offer you:
At Aurizon, we support the development and growth of our employees. With a national portfolio of operations, we offer long-term and exciting career opportunities.
Some of our benefits include:
