The Opportunity
The Principal Sustainability Officer is a high-level role in Council’s Sustainability team, within the City Futures department. This position focuses on actions to respond to the climate emergency and improve Integrated Water Management (IWM) across Council. The position:
- Requires expertise in IWM, to develop and deliver these projects informed by detailed technical assessments
- Supports internal and external stakeholders to embed IWM outcomes in capital project planning, design, delivery, operation and maintenance.
- Supports Council’s Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) processes and planning
- Helps guide Council in managing climate change risks, and plan for the impacts of climate change on Council operations, assets and local communities
- Establishes and leads a network of internal stakeholders responsible for the delivery of IWM projects across Council
- Works with the Sustainability team, community, key partners and stakeholders, supporting action on the climate emergency, and actively participates in joint sustainability projects
- Provides professional IWM and ESD expertise across Council and to the Moonee Valley community.
Responsibilities
This position will lead the design and delivery of IWM, ESD and sustainability initiatives including:
- Build capacity within Council for design and construction readiness of IWM and ESD projects, embedding best practice within the organisation, and review the WSUD voluntary contribution program
- Project management from project initiation and scoping, through to budgeting, resource planning, stakeholder engagement, implementation and preparing Council and Executive reports, briefings or workshops on IWM and ESD
- Develop and maintain external partnerships with IWM and ESD bodies, other councils, Victorian Government, the community and other stakeholders to improve, progress and deliver sustainability outcomes, and regional initiatives, including identifying and applying for grant opportunities
About You
To be suitable for this position, you will have:
- A tertiary qualification in IWM, Climate Change, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental or Civil Engineering, or a related field combined with relevant work and practical experience.
- Extensive experience in leading environmental programs and project development and delivery, to agreed timelines and budgets.
- An understanding of working in Local Government. Experience working in Local Government is preferred.
