The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a dedicated team driving our Justice Reinvestment program as part of ALS’s commitment to Closing the Gap. You’ll lead place-based, community-led initiatives that build strong partnerships and drive justice reform across NSW.
- Lead and support a regional team of Community Partnerships Officers, managing work plans, performance, and project deliverables across NSW.
- Develop tools, strategies, and resources to support local justice plans, data collection, and implementation of justice reinvestment initiatives.
- Strengthen local partnerships by collaborating with Aboriginal communities, Just Reinvest NSW, CAPO, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure community-led justice initiatives are informed by ALS client experiences, local Aboriginal knowledge, and systemic reform priorities.
- Contribute to policy development and reporting, including advice, briefings, project plan, and evaluations to support Closing the Gap outcomes.
- Represent ALS in key forums and maintain alignment with ALS values, EEO, WHS policies, and organisational code of conduct.
Who Are We Looking For?
A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Must Identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander
- Extensive leadership and team management skills, including supervising Aboriginal staff and supporting professional development across remote/regional teams.
- Strong understanding of the criminal justice system, justice reinvestment, and culturally safe, community-led approaches to change for Aboriginal communities.
- Extensive experience working with Aboriginal communities, including in community organising, development, advocacy, and engagement strategy design.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence, advocate, and communicate effectively in diverse settings.
- Well-developed organisational, planning, and communication skills, with the ability to manage projects, produce reports/policies, and work independently or in teams.
- Willingness to travel and support regional teams, and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
