Curtin University
$118,308 - $140,147 a year
Perth, Western Australia
Contract

Job Reference: 1059519

About the Role:

Curtin University is seeking a full-time Program Manager, Justice Health (official title: Research Fellow) for a two-year opportunity with the option of renewal. This position is ideal for an experienced research manager and emerging research leader. In this unique opportunity, you will play a central role in supporting and advancing the Justice Health Group’s program of research and impact, including primary responsibility for day-to-day management of the MRFF-funded Health After Release from Prison (HARP) trial.

The HARP trial involves three phases: (1) national consultation and co-design of a model of transitional healthcare for people leaving prisons; (2) a multi-site randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the model of care, in south-east Queensland; and (3) adaptation and scaling of the model of care, to support national uptake and ongoing evaluation.

This role requires close collaboration with an international network of researchers, policymakers, and service providers. The successful candidate will also contribute to funding applications, academic and policy publications, and other dissemination activities. This position is well-suited for an experienced and ambitious postdoctoral researcher who possesses strong project management skills and a passion for improving health and social outcomes for individuals in contact with the criminal justice system.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • HARP Trial Management
    • Primary responsibility for day-to-day management of the HARP trial.
    • Liaise with a national and international research team, research staff, and government and service partners involved in the HARP trial.
    • Ensure adherence to project timelines, budget, ethics approvals, reporting obligations, and data security and management requirements.
  • Research Dissemination and Impact
    • Drive dissemination activities across the Group, including giving national and international conference presentations, leading and contributing to academic publications and other knowledge translation products, and engaging meaningfully with government, community, and media stakeholders.
    • Raise the public and professional profile of the Justice Health Group through targeted communication and strategic partnerships.
  • Academic Contribution
    • Lead and contribute to funding applications.
    • Supervise and mentor junior staff and HDR students (Honours, Masters, and PhD-level).
    • Participate in relevant academic networks, events, and professional development opportunities.
  • Program Management and Coordination
    • Monitor Group and project budgets, staffing, reporting requirements, and timelines across multiple projects.
    • Support team operations, internal communications, and strategic planning.
Who we are looking for – Essential Selection Criteria:
  • A PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., public health, criminology, epidemiology, psychology, sociology, or related fields).
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing large and complex research projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience writing for academic, policy, and lay audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across institutions and disciplines.
  • Demonstrated capacity to engage respectfully and effectively with diverse groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people who have experienced incarceration, and government stakeholders.
  • A strong academic track record relative to opportunity.
Desirable Criteria
  • Prior knowledge of Australian criminal justice systems and/or the justice health field.
  • Experience working in research involving cross-sectoral data linkage.
  • Experience in design and/or implementation of randomised controlled trials.
  • Experience developing or delivering research translation and impact strategies and outputs.
  • Hands-on experience with quantitative data analysis.
*Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply. If your qualifications or experience look different from what we've described, but you feel your skills and potential are a match to the capabilities we need, please apply. We are looking for diversity in experience, thought, and approach.

Role Requirements:
  • As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.
  • Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction.
  • Occasional interstate travel will be required for project meetings, site visits, or conferences; this will include semi-regular [i.e., every 3-6 months] travel to Brisbane during implementation of the HARP Trial RCT.
  • This role requires that the successful candidate undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.
Your New Team: The Justice Health Group

The Justice Health Group is a multidisciplinary and mixed-methods research team working to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for people who come into contact with the criminal justice system, in Australia and internationally. A cornerstone of our work is the use of large-scale, cross-sectoral, linked administrative data to generate high-quality evidence, and use that evidence to advocate for meaningful change to policy, practice, and/or service design.

Our projects span youth and adult criminal justice settings, in both custodial and community contexts. We work collaboratively with government agencies, service providers, academics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, and people with lived experience of incarceration to ensure that our work is rigorous, ethical, and achieves real-world impact.

We work across all Australian jurisdictions, with teams based in Perth and Melbourne. We are increasingly contributing to international research and policy initiatives, including in collaboration with leading academic institutions (e.g., Yale, UBC, Oxford) and key multilateral organisations (e.g., WHO, UNICEF, ICRC).
