Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Provisional Fellow with an interest in Research to join the Department of Anaesthesia at RPA Hospital

What you will be doing:

This position is open to qualified candidates who have completed a minimum of four years of accredited anaesthesia training and have completed or are currently undertaking the FANZCA part 2 exam. You will be involved in the providing anaesthesia care to patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures, interventional procedures, or obstetric care with appropriate degrees of supervision and independence. You will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in subspecialty areas of your choice, and have support provided for research and/or teaching activities. Candidates for this position will engage in self-directed as well as work-directed learning of relevant principles and material.

In addition to developing the attributes that make an outstanding junior Consultant Anaesthetist, this role has a focus on development of skills in research with direct supervision by the Nuffield Chair of Anaesthetics, Professor Robert Sanders. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a significant research project with the aim of working towards a higher degree in research, and presentation of this research at local and national meetings.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management

The Department of Anaesthesia at RPAH, in which the successful applicant will work, offers comprehensive anaesthetic and acute pain management services to a large tertiary referral hospital. The Department provides anaesthesia for all adult and limited scope of paediatric surgical disciplines, and has one of the largest Obstetric caseloads of any hospital in NSW. In addition anaesthesia services are also provided to The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, the Institute of Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, and Sydney Dental Hospital. The Acute Pain Service provides anaesthetic based supervision of advanced acute pain modalities.
The Department also provides anaesthesia support for a number of remote areas including the Radiology Department (for Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology, MRI, and PET) and the Cardiology EP and Cath Lab. The successful applicant will need to be able to work efficiently within these teams, and communicate well with other professionals within RPAH and the community.
The RPAH Department of Anaesthesia has a strong history of teaching and training, not just for members of the Anaesthetic Department, but for other disciplines within the hospital including ICU and ED trainees, Nurses, JMOs and medical students. The Department has its own, self-managed, simulation lab, and Fellows are encouraged and expected to participate in these training activities.

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  • Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences. And ability to priorities workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  • Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia.
  • Demonstrated previous experience in, and willingness to deliver, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training and commitment to after-hours and on-call rosters.
  • Commitment to a research project over the 12 month period under the supervision of Prof Sanders.
  • Evidence of prior publications in peer reviewed journals and/or higher research degrees (including MSc, MPhil or PhD) and/or formal training in analytics (for example, statistics).
