Primary objective
Successfully complete the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service Recruit Training Course and contribute to the success of the
Strategic Directions of the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service.
Context statement
Recruits are required to complete a 20-week recruit course and subsequent operational skills consolidation for a further period of 7
months. Upon successful completion of the 12-month probation period your appointment will be confirmed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Maintain and apply required competencies, skills and knowledge gained during recruit training.
2. Respond to emergency incidents when assigned to the Operations Division
3. Conduct Public Education and Community Fire Safety functions as directed.
4. Discharge duties with the highest level of professionalism and personal integrity and in accordance with legislation, policies, and
procedures.
5. Assist in maintaining the operational readiness of NTFRS resources.
6. Contribute to the ongoing review and enhancement of legislation, policy and procedures pertaining to the role of the NT Fire and
Rescue Service for the continuous improvement of service delivery.
7. Ensure that health and fitness levels are maintained in order to carry out duties effectively.
8. Adhere to organisational health and safety policies to contribute to a safe and healthy work environment
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Successful completion of Year 12 or a recognised tertiary or trade qualification.
2. The ability to meet the health, fitness and academic standards of the recruit selection program.
3. An understanding of the NTFRS structure and the roles and responsibilities of a Firefighter.
4. Well-developed organisational and communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment and individually with members
of the community.
5. Have an understanding of Equity and Diversity and Occupational Health and Safety within the workplace.
6. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
7. Must possess a Medium Rigid driver’s licence (manual) as recognised by the Northern Territory Government, a minimum of 1 week
prior to the commencement of the Recruit Course.
8. Have a current First Aid certificate or equivalent.
9. Have a basic understanding of mechanical tools and their use.
