About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is seeking to hire two part-time Research Assistants for the Community Paediatrics Research Group. The group is part of the Central Clinical School. The group, led by Professor Susan Woolfenden, includes a diverse team of researchers committed to conducting studies that help children and their families. We are a respectful and driven team that aims to carry out important research with the goal of enhancing knowledge, clinical practices, and care models, focusing on:

  • Research to enhance child health, well-being, and development
  • Building equitable health systems in the community
  • Studying health disparities and outcomes using epidemiological data

The University of Sydney are seeking two part-time (0.4FTE) Research Assistants to join EPIC-ND, a MRFF-funded research project. This mixed-methods, multi-site randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of social prescribing to address unmet social needs of parents/carers of children with neurodisability, with implementation evaluation and economic evaluation. The EPIC-ND research project is being led by The University of Sydney in collaboration with the New South Wales Paediatric Rehabilitation Services (The Children’s Hospital at Westmead; Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick; John Hunter Children’s Hospital). In this role, you will collaborate closely with various stakeholders, including the university, NSW Health partners, community partners, children/young people, and their families. You will be working directly with children (aged 0-18 years) with neurodisability and their parents/carers.

Two part-time positions are available:

Remote Research Assistant based in Newcastle, NSW supporting the HNEkidsRehab study site. Research Assistant based in Sydney,NSW supporting The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and/or Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick study sites.

The Research Assistants will be willing to learn how to assist with recruitment for research, submitting ethics applications, collecting data, and driving the execution of research activities. They help provide vital research-related advice and support data analysis. They also collaborate with researchers and stakeholders to ensure a seamless flow of research documentation. This position is ideal for those who are passionate about understanding and tackling health issues. This is a role for someone who enjoys working in a collaborative and dynamic environment and the robust administrative, ethical and governance tasks that support research.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • undertake screening of potential participants, participant recruitment, study consent, and study enrolment at the NSW Health study sites

  • support data collection (both quantitative and qualitative) and data analysis

  • enter data into databases, maintaining tracking documentation, and ensuring data quality and accuracy

  • confidently communicate sensitive information and participant data to members of the team per approved processes

  • assist with preparing and submitting ethics applications

  • coordinate with the team to produce quality reports, verify data accuracy within university systems, and actively engage in compliance initiatives to uphold regulations

  • attend research meetings and training sessions and take minutes

  • assist with preparing and submitting ethics applications

  • undertake other duties appropriate within the classification level as required.

About you

  • undergraduate degree or equivalent in Health, Allied Health, Psychology, or other relevant discipline with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience

  • knowledge, experience and understanding of the health and social care needs of priority populations, including people with lived experience of neurodisability

  • experience working with and/or supporting people with chronic and complex health conditions including people with lived experience of neurodisability is preferred

  • knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones

  • experience working with a range of computer systems and applications, including REDCap, NVIVO, and Excel

  • demonstrated superior interpersonal communication skills, including with people with lived experience of neurodisability, to initiate and maintain effective stakeholder relationships whilst exercising discretion and confidentiality

  • excellent time management skills, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders

  • demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demand

  • knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
