Position overview
This fixed-term position will be based at the School of Art and Design, working in close collaboration with the School of Engineering, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, and the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund, this position supports an ANU transdisciplinary team partnering with communities in the Northern Rivers (Wilsons River Catchment, Mullumbimby/Main Arm, Uki) and Cabonne Shire to develop, test, and evaluate local community-led flood intelligence networks. These networks aim to strengthen community capacity and resilience through reduced vulnerability, enhanced communication, and the design and development of state-wide resources for informed and timely preparation and response to flooding events.
The Person
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in design or a related field, with an active research and publication agenda. The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of: co-design or participatory design; design for disaster risk reduction; design for climate and environmental futures; humanitarian engineering; citizen science projects; or spatial information design and mapping. They will have a demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate across university sectors, industry, government and community through research, teaching or practice. The Research Fellow will contribute to the supervision of research-support staff and students delivering project-based learning and actively participate in the broader intellectual and academic life of the School, College and University.
Located within the School of Art and Design, the Design program combines contemporary design methods and digital technologies with hands-on making. It prepares graduates who are skilled, inventive, versatile and ready to engage with present and future global opportunities and challenges. The program is strategically undisciplined in recognition of the need for designers of the future to navigate complexity across traditional boundaries. We support a focus on social and environmental responsibility and encourage students to develop an ethical framework as emerging design practitioners. This position will contribute to the design program through broad expertise in contemporary design research and practice.
The position is based in Canberra but involves travel to partner locations, a current Australian driver’s licence would be beneficial.
