The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Safety Coordinator to support the coordination of safety, risk and compliance activities of Barwon Prison.

About the Business Unit

Corrections Victoria (CV) operates Victoria's adult custodial corrections system and Post Sentence Scheme. Its vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities. Corrections Victoria's mission is to create a safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions.

HM Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne and is part of the Barwon South-West Regional structure. It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners. The prison officially opened in January 1990 and currently houses up to 416 men in custody, including high security, long term management, protection (including specialist protection), general mainstream (maximum security) and medium security prisoners.

About the Role

The Safety Coordinator will work in partnership with a range of safety and wellbeing stakeholders under the leadership of the Safety Manager with a focus upon driving improved safety outcomes through proactive preventative health and safety strategies. As the successful candidate, you will support and monitor Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within Corrections with a focus on including implementing actions related to A Safer Place to Work initiative, aimed at preventing and reducing occupational violence in maximum security prisons.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Working collaboratively with the Safety and Assurance Manager and key partners to ensure a consistent approach to the management of health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Continuously building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinating day to day safety support to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for staff and to meet CV's responsibilities under health and safety laws.
  • Participating in local incident reviews and investigations to support learning and continuous improvement
  • Training and coaching staff on best practice safety processes and methodologies

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Subject matter expertise in occupational health and safety management systems with demonstrated business partnering experience.
  • Proven experience managing a diverse stakeholder group to deliver consistent and quality safety service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience in the application of OHS legislation, codes of practice and regulations.

Qualifications/requirements

Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or demonstrated extensive experience in safety are desirable. A full and current driver's license is required due to the need to work across different locations.
