As one of the fastest growing companies in the quantum sector, we’ve had a number of key milestones:
- In November 2023, we announced an industry-first partnership with IBM Quantum Services, natively integrating our performance management software with all IBM quantum computers. Building off of this relationship, in September 2024 we started offering two services via IBM’s new Qiskit Functions Catalog as an inaugural partner.- Designed and moved our Global HQ offices and lab space into the first purpose-built (and award winning) commercial and research facility for a quantum technology company in Australia.- Continued to deliver real world outcomes across the quantum sectors, with our work with Australian Defence on software-ruggedized quantum sensing for navigation without GPS, as featured in the New York Times.- In October 2024, we announced our record breaking expansion of our Series B funding round to USD $113M, with $59M USD of new capital.- Grew our global presence to include Los Angeles, Berlin, and Oxford - as well as the recently announced office in San Francisco.
From educating the workforce on how quantum computing works, to building the next generation of quantum sensors, to delivering massive performance gains for end-users, it all starts with hiring the right talent. If you want to help us build the Quantum future, read on.
About the roleReporting to the Head of Design, as an Industrial Designer you’ll work at the intersection of science, engineering, and user experience to shape the future of quantum sensing hardware. You’ll collaborate with mechanical engineers, product designers, and researchers to create high-performance, ruggedized, ergonomic, and manufacturable products that seamlessly integrate physical and digital experiences.
You’ll be responsible for bringing form, function, and detail to advanced technology—designing enclosures and physical interfaces that reflect Q-CTRL’s values of technical excellence, user-centricity, and visual craft. From early concept to production, you’ll help establish a hardware design language that is as intelligent as it is purposeful.
What you'll be doing:
- Design real products: Create enclosure designs and componentry for production-ready sensing hardware, balancing technical, ergonomic, and environmental constraints.
- Translate complexity into clarity: Work closely with scientists and engineers to understand technical requirements and transform them into clear, ergonomic, and elegant industrial design solutions.
- Bring ideas to life: Own the process from sketch through to 3D CAD, prototyping, rendering, and refinement for manufacture.
- Design the full experience: Lead the design of our hardware products and their supporting software touchpoints to ensure a seamless, integrated user experience.
- Collaborate deeply: Partner with mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, research, product, and internal and external manufacturing teams to deliver outcomes that are visually refined, technically sound, and production-ready.
- Craft consistency: Contribute to the development of a hardware design language that complements our software UI and strengthens the Q-CTRL ecosystem.
- Deliver with precision: Execute with a strong command of materials, finishes, and fabrication methods to ensure quality, scalability, and attention to detail.
- Champion design excellence: Set a high bar for craft and consistency, upholding our brand and the company value to Be Revered through every design outcome.
Ideally you'll have:
- 5+ years industrial design or related hardware design experience.
- A portfolio showcasing end-to-end work—from concept generation to final product—across form, function, and manufacturing detail.
- Experience designing electro-mechanical products, ideally involving integration across mechanical and electronic components.
- Advanced skills in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, Keyshot or similar CAD and rendering tools.
- Demonstrated ability to balance aesthetics with technical feasibility, especially in ruggedized or high-precision environments.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with mechanical engineers, systems engineers, manufacturers, and design teams to bring products to life.
- Understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles and experience working across both internal and external production environments.
- Experience working in or adjacent to regulated industries (e.g., medical, aerospace, defense) is a plus.
- Strong visual storytelling and communication skills.
- A proactive, detail-oriented mindset with a passion for delivering excellence.
