Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Skilled Horticultural Worker to support the implementation and management of horticultural practices across CAIT’s cropping programs. This role involves hands-on work in cultivating, planting, irrigating and maintaining a range of horticultural trial crops.
The role is based on a remote cattle station approximately 200 km from the nearest town. This is a permanent, full-time position with the potential for long-term employment.
The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research, planting schedules, and crop management systems supporting the growth of CAIT’s sustainable agriculture initiatives in Northern Australia.
Key Responsibilities
Skilled horticultural work responsibilities include:
- Preparing, planting, cultivating, irrigating, and harvesting crops in accordance with seasonal and project requirements.
- Monitoring crop health and growth, and assisting with pest, disease, and weed control measures.
- Operating and maintaining horticultural equipment and tools.
- Collecting data and samples for crop performance and environmental monitoring.
- Supporting trial crop management.
- Applying fertilisers, mulches, and soil amendments as directed.
- Complying with safety and biosecurity protocols.
- Assisting in the development of best-practice horticultural procedures
Skills and Qualifications
- At least three years of relevant horticultural experience
- Sound knowledge of horticultural practices and crop management.
- Practical experience with irrigation systems and farm machinery.
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and remote environments.
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow planting and maintenance schedules.
- Basic record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to live and work in a regional and remote area of Northern Australia.
- English language proficiency sufficient to meet workplace communication requirements.
