Are you a passionate and skilled Geriatrician looking to make a meaningful impact in a thriving health service? Maitland Hospital is seeking a dedicated Geriatrician to provide a comprehensive consultative and inpatient and outpatient geriatric service, including Hospital in the Home, while contributing to medical education and advanced trainee supervision.

About the Role
We are looking for a motivated Geriatrician to enhance our medical services at Maitland, Kurri Kurri and Cessnock District Hospitals.

The role includes:

  • Providing expert acute geriatric care to inpatients, consultative and outpatient services at Maitland Hospital, Kurri Kurri Hospital and Cessnock District Hospital
  • Supporting and servicing Geriatric models of care for Orthogeriatric, Hospital in the Home, residential care in-reach and similar programs.
  • Leading and contributing to educational activities for the Department of Medicine.
  • Supervising advanced trainees, fostering the next generation of specialists.
  • Willing to participate in clinical services development projects and change management.

Essential Criteria:

  • Primary medical degree registered with AHPRA.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Geriatric Medicine).
  • Recent, comprehensive experience in Geriatric Medicine.
  • Dual Fellowship in Geriatric & General Medicine (desirable).

Maitland Hospital is a modern, state-of-the-art facility that opened in 2022, replacing the old Maitland Hospital. It serves as the major referral and district hospital for the growing Lower Hunter region, providing a broad range of acute and specialist healthcare services.

Located in one of NSW’s fastest-growing areas, Maitland Hospital is designed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the community.

  • 339 beds with capacity for future expansion
  • 24-hour Emergency Department
  • Comprehensive medical, surgical, and maternity services
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Modern imaging and diagnostic services
  • State-of-the-art inpatient wards and rehabilitation services
  • Hospital in the Home (HITH) programs

The Medical Department at Maitland Hospital is a key provider of specialist and acute medical care, with a strong focus on education, training, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Services include:

  • General Medicine – providing comprehensive care for a diverse patient population
  • Geriatric Medicine – inpatient care, consultative services, rehabilitation, and Hospital in the Home
  • Acute and Chronic Disease Management – including heart failure, respiratory, oncology and diabetes services
  • Palliative Medicine - providing direct clinical care to patients and families referred to our Palliative Care Service, with a strong focus on community-based care.
  • Medical Education and Training – involvement in teaching, supervision of trainees, and professional development opportunities
  • Collaboration with Tertiary Centres – working closely with John Hunter Hospital and other Newcastle-based facilities for specialist referrals and shared patient care

Kurri Kurri Hospital, located just 25 minutes from Maitland, is a 28-bed facility primarily focused on subacute, low-acuity general medicine and geriatric care. It also offers rehabilitation services with an additional 24 beds, along with surgical services in ophthalmology and general surgery. The hospital features an Emergency Department supported by My ED and provides outpatient services in Allied Health and geriatrics.


Cessnock District Hospital, located approximately 45 minutes from Maitland Hospital, is a 50-bed facility providing general medical and surgical care. It has an Emergency Department staffed by GP VMOs and operating theatres supporting orthopaedics, general surgery, gynaecology, and gastroenterology (endoscopy) procedures. The hospital also offers outpatient services.
