About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Utilities Manager to join the team to play a key role in optimising the University’s utility management, driving efficiency and sustainability across electricity, gas, water, and wastewater systems.
The Utilities Manager leads the development and execution of utility reduction initiatives, offering expert technical and strategic guidance to manage the University’s $25 million annual utilities budget, while driving efficiency and achieving emissions reduction targets through comprehensive monitoring and reporting.
This position leads the procurement and day-to-day management of utility contracts, monitoring systems, budgeting, compliance, data analysis, and reporting. The Utilities Manager is responsible for developing and implementing utility management strategies, focusing on reducing consumption, meeting emissions reduction targets, and delivering cost-effective, sustainable outcomes.
As a key member of the Strategic Asset Management (SAM) team within the Asset Management and Operations (AMO) division, the Utilities Manager contributes to the delivery of strategic objectives across the University. The role demands technical expertise, strategic insight, and strong leadership to ensure reliable, efficient, and sustainable utility operations.
Success in this role requires building strong relationships with stakeholders across the University, including the Sustainability Office, University Infrastructure, Professional Service Units (PSUs), Faculties, and Portfolios, fostering collaboration and innovation to ensure effective and sustainable utility management.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
lead the procurement of contracts and manage contracts supporting utility management activities including Utility Management System maintenance contractor, Utility Advice & Billing Management consultant, metering contractors, and ad hoc expert consultant advice
oversee the operation, maintenance, data and compliance of utility management systems, including electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater
lead and manage utility-related projects, including design, construction, and implementation of new systems, upgrades, metering and sub-metering installations
develop utilities data sources and prepare and submit reporting for all regulatory and voluntary sustainability and environmental reporting schemes applicable to COS operations, including but not limited to, NGER's, ASRS, TEFMA, NPI, THEI, University Annual Report, University Annual Sustainability Report, Net Zero Roadmap reporting
build rapport and business relationships across the work area to keep abreast of critical issues and priorities, to effectively manage stakeholders
analyse data, develop dashboards, prepare presentations, reports, briefings, and other communication to inform on utilities consumption, performance, efficiency and reduction progress and achievements, both internally and externally.
About you

tertiary qualifications in Data Analytics, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Sustainability, or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
effective management of a diverse group of key stakeholders on complex projects and the ability to develop/cultivate productive relationships
demonstrated track record in setting and managing large scale budgets, meeting financial targets and managing for financial sustainability
experience in the evaluation, implementation and management of changes to business practices to improve efficiency and effectiveness
relevant experience gathering and analysing data and organizing reports, including the ability to present (e.g. Power Bi Dash boards) data and insights in a way that is engaging, concise, and supports leaders in their decision making and management practices.
