Primary objective
Work with staff to provide guidance and support for all Aboriginal students and the school community to achieve strong
educational outcomes and enhance student wellbeing, attendance and engagement. The role strengthens positive relationships
between the school, students and families by actively participating in planning, meetings and school events, encouraging parent
participation in all school activities.
Context statement
Titjikala School is small remote T–6 school located 120kms South of Alice Springs. The Titjikala community has a population of
approximately 200 people. The main language spoken in community is Yankunytjatjara.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a caring and supportive environment for individual Aboriginal students to achieve improved outcomes in the education
system by working with students, families, school staff, community members, and external agencies and organisations.
2. Assist all school staff in the identification and facilitation of appropriate student support programs. Raise an awareness of the
needs of Aboriginal students, their families, community and cultural backgrounds to improve student attendance and
educational outcomes.
3. Assist and support the school principal and leadership team with the development of a harmonious school environment that is
culturally inclusive and works to actively engage and empower students and their families.
4. Liaise, assist, promote and support the establishment of sustainable networks which link families, students, schools, Aboriginal
organisations and government agencies.
5. Provide administrative and professional support services associated with the primary objective of the position.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrate high-level and comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal issues, knowledge and culture, and proven ability to
assist in the implementation of programs that celebrate and raise awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture.
2. Proven ability to work within a cross-cultural school environment, interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and
successfully develop effective partnerships with families and the community.
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal students and liaise with their families, and community in
governmental agencies, to develop mechanisms to improve student attendance and retention, including an understanding of
the experience of families from remote communities where families communicate primarily in their traditional language.
4. Demonstrated ability to work individually and as part of a team to assist in the planning, coordination and implementation of
strategies and programs for Aboriginal stakeholders.
5. Proven ability to operate in a politically and culturally sensitive environment.
Desirable
1. Certificate IV – Indigenous Education Work or similar qualification and/or the ability to obtain such a qualification.
2. Current NT Driver’s Licence or the ability to obtain one.
