What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner provides flexible, holistic and culturally sensitive antenatal and postnatal (up to 6 weeks) support to improve the birthing experiences and birthing outcomes experienced by Aboriginal women and their families in the Westmead Hospital catchment area.

The Aboriginal Health Practitioner will provide a range of direct clinical services as defined by the agreed Scope of Practice and primary healthcare functions for the community in which they work.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualification: Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health Care (Practice)
  • Registration: Current Registration with AHPRA as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner
  • This is an identified Aboriginal Position. An applicant’s race is a genuine occupational qualification and exemption is claimed under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.
  • Being Female is a genuine occupational qualification for this position as described under Section 31 respectively of the Anti-Discrimination Act, 1977 (NSW)

Selection Criteria:

  • Holds or aspires to hold a Certificate III qualification in Aboriginal Primary Health Care or Aboriginal Family Health or other equivalent qualification in a health-related field relevant to the role. For an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, holds a Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (Practice) and a current authority to practice as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner
    Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multidisciplinary team and to liaise with other health professionals and external agencies to facilitate integrated care for Aboriginal people.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, time management, and computer literacy including word processing and data entry skills.
  • Active involvement in the local Aboriginal community, with demonstrated understanding and commitment to improving the health issues impacting on Aboriginal women, families and babies.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, use own initiative and take a lead role in initiating and carrying out community screening activities.
  • Current NSW Driver’s license and willingness to use for work purposes
