We are seeking an experienced and driven Breaking News Reporter to join our team. The ideal candidate is a professional with strong journalistic experience, who is committed to accuracy, and has the ability to think and write quickly. This role requires you to deliver fast-breaking news takes on stories of the day, primarily for our digital platforms.
Day to day you will:
- Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, well-written, and well-researched stories in a timely manner that conform to style for publication across platforms.
- Ensure all copy meets legal requirements.
- Take ownership of stories/issues and follow up on them when appropriate.
- Demonstrate excellent news judgment and knowledge of current affairs.
- Ensure the highest standard of accuracy, ethics, and editorial quality.
- Meet agreed audience benchmarks and deadlines.
- Ability to fill in for other areas of the newsroom as needed.
Please note: This role works across rotating shifts, including weekends.
Qualifications
What you'll bring:
- Strong journalistic background.
- Demonstrated previous experience in a major newsroom.
- Experience in breaking news and blog reporting.
- First-rate news judgment.
- Proven ability to quickly respond to breaking news and identify contacts for comment.
- Ability to work collaboratively across The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and national teams.
