National Parks and Wildlife Service has an exciting opportunity for a Discovery Ranger (Tour Guide) to work as part of the close-knit and high performing team across National Parks in Greater Sydney.

About the role
Discovery Rangers (Tour Guides) develop and implement diverse activities and learning experiences for visitors to the National Parks and reserves with aim to foster community awareness, appreciation and understanding for conserving the state’s natural and cultural heritage, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service as part of a state-wide coordinated education program.

This hands-on, educational role will focus on conducting weekday excursions for primary and secondary school groups, school holiday leisure programs and if required be involved in some weekend leisure programs.

Under the direction of the Discovery Coordinator this position will write education and leisure tours programs as well as assist in the training and supervision of staff and volunteers to ensure that they can effectively and efficiently fulfil the requirements of their roles.


About You
To be successful for this role, strong communication skills are paramount. You will be developing and delivering education focused, guided activities and programs to visitors to the park and/or school students in an innovative, interesting, flexible and contemporary manner; ensuring the needs and expectations of the target audience are met. Self-management is important for this role as there may be times you will be working alone and will need to ensure safety is a priority, meeting the required Work Health Safety standards. Your experience in curriculum-based education, a demonstrated passion for geography, environment and science, Australian history and heritage and awareness of NPWS values will be highly valued.


Essential requirements

  • Current Working with Children check.
  • First Aid Certificate and Current Australian Drivers Licence, or willingness to obtain.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including week-days, weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering interpretative guiding and/or educational programs to students or groups.
  • Awareness of Aboriginal culture and broad knowledge of the natural and historic/ heritage values of the local area.
  • Sound understanding of Risk Management, Minimal Impact and Bush Safety principles in relation to guided tours in a cultural or field setting.
