Job Description
About the Role
We’re looking for an experienced and driven Lead Backend Engineer to help architect and build scalable services that power client platforms, with a focus on Server-Driven UI (SDUI) implementations.
You’ll work across high-performance APIs, shape back-end systems from the ground up, and collaborate closely with front-end, mobile, and product teams to deliver seamless, dynamic experiences. A strong background in Node.js is essential, as many of our platforms are built using it, and you’ll be driving architectural decisions and hands-on implementation using Node in production environments.
If you enjoy balancing technical leadership with hands-on development, and love working on problems that matter, you’ll feel right at home here.
Responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure back-end services using Node.js
Develop and maintain APIs that support web, mobile, and SDUI clients
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver performant, integrated solutions
Contribute to architectural and infrastructure decisions, with a focus on scalability and maintainability
Lead code reviews and mentor engineers in clean coding practices and software craftsmanship
Implement and optimise CI/CD pipelines to streamline backend deployments
Ensure observability through effective monitoring, logging, and performance tuning
Work with product, design, and QA to deliver new features and continuously improve existing ones
Stay across backend and cloud tech trends, and bring fresh ideas to the table
Qualifications
About You
7+ years of backend development experience using Node.js, Kotlin, Java, TypeScript or similar
Proven experience designing and building scalable APIs and service-oriented architectures
Hands-on experience supporting or integrating with Server-Driven UI or dynamic front-end patterns
Strong understanding of data modelling and experience with relational or NoSQL databases
Comfortable working with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git/GitHub, and modern DevOps practices
Solid knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, and concurrency
Great communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Bonus Points
Experience transitioning from or integrating with legacy systems (e.g. ASP.NET)
Containerisation know-how (Docker, Kubernetes)
Exposure to GraphQL, gRPC, or event-driven systems (Kafka, SNS/SQS)
Background in fast-paced, product-led environments
