Position overview
The Municipal Building Surveyor is responsible for carrying out Council’s statutory functions under the Building Act and Regulations, including inspections, enforcement, and the issuing of notices, orders and certificates. The role leads and manages the Building Services team, provides expert advice to internal and external stakeholders, and oversees programs related to essential safety measures and pool safety compliance. It also involves investigating complaints, managing legal processes, and representing Council in regulatory matters.
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform Council’s statutory functions under the Building Act and Regulations
- Lead and manage the Building Services team to ensure service delivery
- Oversee building inspections, enforcement, and compliance programs
- Provide expert advice and represent Council in regulatory matters
This is a full-time role based in Bairnsdale, however we are open to part time for the right applicant. While there is 60/40 hybrid WFH flexibility, the incumbent needs to live in the region to be able to perform the duties of the role.
What we require from you (Key Selection Criteria):
- Tertiary qualification in Building Surveying and unlimited Building Surveyor registration with the VBA
- Extensive experience in building surveying, compliance, and enforcement
- Proven leadership skills with experience managing and developing teams
- Strong knowledge of the Building Act, Regulations, and Victorian local government
If successful, you will need to undertake a police check, pre-employment medical check and psychometric testing. You must also be legally entitled to work in Australia.
