Primary objective
As part of a multi-disciplinary Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) team the Paediatric Specialist provides the provision of
forensic, medical and follow up services to paediatric victims of sexual assault.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide comprehensive forensic examination and medical care to children who have experienced sexual assault. This
includes medico-legal examinations, comprehensive documentation and reports for use in the legal system including as
an expert witness.
2. Identify and analyse service-related data in order to continually evaluate and improve service delivery.
3. Provide expert advice on matters relating to child sexual assault.
4. Develop and maintain strong and effective networks within the health sector, police and legal services and other relevant
service providers in order to promote and support SARC’s objectives, profile and services to those services and the wider
community.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Registered as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and a Fellow of an
appropriate College or hold a postgraduate Fellowship medical qualification e.g. FRACGP, FRACP, and FACRRP.
2. Completed not less than the equivalent of six years of full-time service in medical practice.
3. High-level knowledge and experience in child sexual assault medicine, both clinical and forensic, including statutory and
legal obligations, provision of written and oral expert opinion for court.
4. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, communication, negotiation and collaborative skills specifically around the area
of child sexual assault, and the ability to effectively participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team within a cross-
cultural environment, especially demonstrating an understanding of cultural safety with people from Aboriginal cultures.
5. Effective organisational skills and competence in the use of standard computer software including records and office
systems management, which have resulted in effective team and client outcomes.
Desirable
1. Certificate or Diploma in Forensic Medicine or ability to demonstrate progress towards attainment.
