  • Diverse role to keep you engaged and constantly learning

  • Hybrid opportunity (3 days per week in office, Melbourne CBD based)

V/Line’s purpose is to connect Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport. We believe in giving all Victorians opportunities through travel and transport – connecting them to jobs, education, family and friends, services, tourism and trade.

V/Line is experiencing significant growth and we’re delivering more services, more trains, cheaper fares, and huge projects. With more than 3700 weekly train and coach services, an expansive freight network and unprecedented rail investment, millions of Victorians depend on us to deliver. You could be one of our 3100 committed team members who are up to the challenge.

About the role

As the People Business Partner, you play a key role in supporting V/Line’s People, Safety, Sustainability & Risk function. You’ll work closely with leaders to deliver people strategies that enable day-to-day operations, while applying a best practice lens to performance management, employee relations, engagement, and development. Your guidance will help ensure people initiatives are effective, contemporary, and aligned with organisational needs.

This role sits within the broader People team and primarily supports the Assets & Maintenance and Network Strategy & Development portfolios. While portfolio alignment may adapt over time, the focus remains on fostering collaboration, enabling shared learning, and maintaining balanced workloads across the team.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Support the Lead People Business Partner and managers in identifying workforce needs, addressing talent gaps, and planning for succession.

  • Act as a trusted advisor on employee relations, ensuring legal compliance and a positive work environment.

  • Guide leaders on performance management, including reviews, coaching, and feedback.

  • Provide support during organisational changes to keep employees engaged and aligned with new objectives.

  • Analyse People team data to offer insights on workforce effectiveness, engagement, and development needs.

  • Drive and support organisational policies and programs, championing change and continuous improvement.

  • Work in a large, fast-paced and multi-faceted organisation across CBD and Regional locations.

About You

You are highly adaptable and thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments. You excel at building strong relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels within the organisation. You are confident with managing complex and sensitive situations with professionalism and confidentiality, ensuring that all parties feel respected and supported.

In addition to this, our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a track record of effective collaboration across teams and functions to drive outcomes

  • High level of initiative and a consistent commitment to producing high-quality work, especially under time pressure and with conflicting priorities

  • Demonstrated experience in a People Partnering role, ideally within a large and complex organisation

  • Strategic thinking and excellent problem-solving skills to resolve complex people issues

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and experience in supporting the implementation of change initiatives within an organisation

  • Demonstrated alignment to V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

If your skills or experience don’t exactly match our listed requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and believe in the potential for growth and development.
