RAMS Specialist (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability & Safety)

  • Shape safety and reliability across major rail infrastructure projects

  • Collaborate with expert teams in a high-impact engineering environment

  • Drive performance outcomes with cutting-edge modelling and analysis tools

V/Line’s purpose is to connect Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport. We believe in giving all Victorians opportunities through travel and transport – connecting them to jobs, education, family and friends, services, tourism and trade.

We are experiencing significant growth and delivering more services, more trains, cheaper fares, and huge projects. With more than 3700 weekly train and coach services, an expansive freight network and unprecedented rail investment, millions of Victorians depend on us to deliver. You could be one of our 3100 committed team members who are up to the challenge.

About the role

As a RAMS Specialist, you’ll lead the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety lifecycle across brownfield rail projects, including State, third-party and major periodic maintenance programs. You’ll set RAMS targets, build models and plans, assure design compliance, and provide evidence for safe entry into service. This role is central to translating service KPIs into RAMS requirements and coordinating stakeholders across engineering, operations, maintenance, and suppliers.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Develop and manage RAMS plans, targets, models, and governance.
  • Ensure compliance with EN 50126-1/2, EN 50128, EN 50129 and related standards.
  • Analyse asset performance and support design improvements.
  • Facilitate configuration control and traceability of RAMS requirements.
  • Lead RAMS workshops and contribute to Safety-in-Design and risk processes.
  • Provide assurance materials for validation, compliance, and acceptance.
  • Represent V/Line in RAMS working groups and stakeholder forums.
  • Support Maintenance Requirements Analysis and integrate outputs into design.
  • Monitor RAMS program delivery and report status at key project stages.
  • Mentor engineers and SMEs and guide RAMS workstreams.

About you

You’re a seasoned RAMS professional with deep experience in rail infrastructure and a strong analytical mindset. You thrive in complex project environments and enjoy working across disciplines to deliver safe, reliable outcomes. You’re confident in stakeholder engagement and bring a collaborative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • Engineering degree (systems, electrical, mechanical) or equivalent
  • Demonstrated expertise in RAMS delivery within complex rail environments, particularly brownfield projects
  • Proven capability across systems such as signalling, telecoms, level crossings, and points
  • Advanced proficiency in FMECA, FTA, reliability modelling (Weibull, repairable systems), maintainability analysis, and safety-case development
  • Strong discipline in requirements traceability and stage-gate delivery across multi-contract programs
  • Skilled in RAMS and BI tools (e.g., RBD, Weibull software, Power BI, Excel), with the ability to translate data into meaningful insights
  • Effective stakeholder leadership across engineering, operations, maintenance, and supplier networks
  • Clear and confident communicator, able to engage and influence across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Works autonomously and collaboratively, contributing to team success and cross-functional outcomes
  • Inquisitive and resilient, with a proactive approach to learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated alignment with V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Australian rail regulatory context (ONRSR, ISO 55001)
  • Experience with RCM, TMPs, LORA, spares optimisation, and LCC
  • Integration of RAMS with CMMS and asset data standards
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., functional safety/RAMS) and professional registration (CPEng or equivalent)
  • RIW/field access readiness
  • Familiarity with advanced RAMS modelling tools (e.g., Isograph, ReliaSoft, RAM Commander)

If your skills or experience don’t exactly match our listed requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and believe in the potential for growth and development.
