Location: Hedland Operations – Fortescue's Hedland operations are located on the traditional lands of the Kariyarra people


Roster: 4 Days / 4 Nights / 8 Days Off – FIFO from Perth or Residential in Port Hedland

Ready to take your shunting experience to the next level? Fortescue is looking for motivated and safety-focused Shunters to join our Rail Operations team in Port Hedland.

Whether you’re seeking the balance of an even-time FIFO roster or the lifestyle of living in the Pilbara’s dynamic hub, this role gives you the best of both worlds. You’ll be part of one of the world’s most advanced heavy-haul rail networks, where your skills and teamwork keep our operations moving safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

No two days are the same – you’ll be right at the heart of our rail operations:

  • Deliver safe and consistent shunting practices every shift
  • Carry out operational tasks including shunting, inspections, and basic repairs
  • Work with the rail team to ensure rollingstock is ready when it’s needed
  • Spot risks, raise improvements, and help solve recurring operational challenges
  • Play your part in continuous improvement across the network
  • Maintain compliance with all rail safety and operational procedures

Qualifications and Experience

We’re looking for team players who take pride in doing things the right way and keeping safety front of mind.

  • Previous shunting or rail operations experience
  • A proven track record of working safely and following procedures
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, even under pressure
  • The ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
  • A current driver’s licence and the ability to pass a Category 1 Rail Medical (mandatory)
