About the role
As a Train Controller, you are integral to the success of V/Line’s Integrated Operations Centre. You will coordinate daily train operations, ensure the smooth execution of the train plan and manage service disruptions in real time across V/Line’s 4,000km train and coach network.
Key Responsibilities:
Implement and adjust the daily train plan in response to operational changes.
Communicate service alterations to train operators and stakeholders.
Record and report accurate performance data using operational systems.
Adapt to new technologies and evolving procedures, supporting V/Line’s ongoing digitisation and continuous improvement efforts.
Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
Support emergency response and incident reporting processes.
Manage track occupations and access in line with policy and safety standards.
Roster & Availability Requirements
This role operates within a 24/7 rotating roster in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, 365 days a year. Shifts may include overnight, early mornings, late afternoons, weekends, and public holidays. To meet the operational demands of the role, full availability and flexibility across all rostered times is essential.
Location & Travel Considerations
Given the critical, hands-on nature of the work, this is an onsite-only position based at 628 Bourke Street, Melbourne CBD. Due to fatigue management considerations, candidates who reside within 1 hours travel time to 628 Bourke Street will be highly regarded.
About you
You are a proactive and detail-oriented operator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You thrive in time-sensitive environments and can make quick, accurate decisions under pressure. Your ability to work both independently and collaboratively makes you a valuable team member, and you bring excellent communication and reasoning skills to every task.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
Experience in rail operations, signalling, transport logistics, or other operational environments where safety and compliance are key.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with sound numerical reasoning.
A flexible and adaptable approach to working both autonomously and within a team.
A commitment to learning and applying policies, procedures, and technology effectively.
High attention to detail and familiarity with regulated, process-driven work environments.
Certificate IV in Network Control or relevant Rail Signalling qualifications (desirable)
Demonstrated alignment with V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

Remuneration
This position is paid at a base salary of $51.2999 per hour during the training period, in accordance with the V/Line Operations and Administration Employees Agreement 2023 – Trainee Train Controller.
Upon successful completion of training, the hourly rate increases to $63.0585. Training typically spans a minimum of six months and includes structured classroom learning and practical on-the-job training.
Training Commencement and Availability
Training for this position is expected to commence in November or December. As part of the initial training and rostering requirements, successful candidates may be required to work during the Christmas and New Year period. Candidates who are available during this time will be given priority consideration.
The recruitment and selection process will include safety and cognitive aptitude assessment prior to the interview rounds.
