About the Opportunity

We're currently seeking two Aboriginal Health Workers to join our Aboriginal Palliative Care and Cancer Services Team:

  • 1 Aboriginal Health Worker
  • 1 Male Aboriginal Health Worker


The Aboriginal Palliative Care and Cancer Services Team is a newly established team that will support Aboriginal patients and families accessing cancer treatment and/or palliative care services. The team will consist of a Team Leader, a Senior Aboriginal Health Worker and two Aboriginal Health Workers.

The team will work as part of hospital and community multidisciplinary teams to provide culturally responsive care and support for Aboriginal patients and their families. The Aboriginal Palliative Care and Cancer Services Team will play a pivotal role in supporting staff to ensure the cultural and psychosocial needs of Aboriginal patients and families are understood and met. The team will be required to work effectively with staff of the hospital and external organisations including local Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.

What You'll Be Doing


The Aboriginal Health Worker (AWH) – Palliative Care and Cancer Services is responsible for supporting Aboriginal patients accessing SWSLHD Palliative Care and Cancer Services and ensuring their care is culturally responsive. The position will as part of the SWSLHD Aboriginal Palliative Care and Cancer Services Team and work in collaboration with existing multidisciplinary teams to ensure that the clinical, cultural and psychosocial needs of Aboriginal patients are met as they access treatment. To support the provision of holistic and coordinated care the position will establish and maintain linkages with a range of internal and external service providers. These key stakeholders will include the Aboriginal Chronic Care Team, Hospital Aboriginal Liaison Officers, Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service and Gandangara Health Service.

  • This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). This is an Aboriginal identified role; can you outline your connection to community and how this connection/knowledge will inform the way you work with community in this role?
  • Cert IV Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Care or other relevant qualification and/or relevant experience working within Aboriginal Health services and a willingness to obtain the relevant qualification.
  • Can you please outline your experience working in Health or with Aboriginal communities, including any relevant qualifications that may support you in this role?
  • Can you please explain your understanding of the range of factors that have influenced the health status of Aboriginal communities and their access to health care.
  • Can you describe your experience working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally responsive care coordination or case management services to Aboriginal patients and their families.
  • Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
