This is a 12-month opportunity for an experienced Analyst or Lawyer to join ASIC's Wholesale Markets Team. In this role, you will lead surveillance and compliance work for wholesale market intermediaries and issuers, with a focus on private markets - particularly private credit and private equity funds. Your work will contribute to strengthening standards and trust in Australia's financial system.

The team
The Wholesale Markets Team (WMT) sits within ASIC's Market Conduct team, which works to ensure trust and confidence in Australia's financial markets. WMT is responsible for supervising wholesale OTC intermediaries, issuers, and wholesale funds (including private credit and private equity).
The team undertakes surveillance of market conduct, manages conduct risks, and contributes to the development of market conduct standards. By identifying and disrupting misconduct, raising standards, and promoting a level playing field, WMT helps maintain the integrity and resilience of Australia's wholesale markets.
The role
As a Lawyer / Analyst, you will:
- Review and test compliance of intermediaries and issuers in private markets through on-site surveillance and desk-based reviews.
- Provide strategic analysis, evaluation, and guidance on technical and policy issues relating to private markets, emerging issues, trends, and risks.
- Draft high-quality documents including surveillance findings, memoranda recommending regulatory actions, public reports, guidance, and briefings to senior leaders.
- Lead and manage surveillance projects, ensuring timely delivery of outcomes.
- Collaborate with colleagues across teams to contribute to multi-disciplinary projects and share knowledge and insights.
About you
You will have relevant tertiary qualifications (law, commerce, finance, or related discipline) and strong knowledge of private markets, private credit, private equity funds, and wholesale OTC markets. You bring experience from a legal, compliance, risk, or business analyst role within financial services - such as investment management, corporate finance, investment banking, or a regulatory environment. You have an understanding of relevant legislation (including the Corporations Act, ASIC Act) and industry guidance as they relate to wholesale funds or OTC intermediaries. Experience in providing advice or working on policy matters in wholesale markets, as well as delivering complex projects, will be highly regarded.
You demonstrate sound judgement, strategic thinking, and the ability to clearly communicate complex information to varied audiences. You can manage competing priorities, lead projects to completion, and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. Your attention to detail, proactive approach, and commitment to maintaining market integrity will be key to your success in this role.
